Foreword
This white paper was written some ten years back. Its content still holds true.
Editors note . Since it was decided to maintain the text as it was when written 10 years back, no major update or overhaul was done. Only a quick proofreading was permitted to dot some is and cross some ts.
Notwithstanding this notice it was deemed useful to remind the reader in some places of the date of writing. In that case youll get the cursive editors note: popping up. Example: (Ed.s note: dd 2009).
Please forgive the author some of the more awkward idiosyncrasies that characterize the non-native English speaker/writer. No offense was intended. If it helps, you can always read it with a foreign accent in mind.
***
T his book is the first in a series of practical algae publications .
Over the years I have on and off been contacted with requests for reprints or copies of some of my white papers, scientific papers, essays and even of draft working documents. There seems to be a continued and of recent even growing interest in the micro-algae industry.
The decision to publish this series Practical Micro-Algae Technologies is the joint result of my business coaches cajoling me into publishing and the increase in requests by entrepreneurs, investors and students (much to my surprise).
As e-publishing is as easy and cheap as ever, I was left with very little excuse, other than the usual time constraints, not to publish.
The series intends to publish detailed information on algae production technologies. It will include papers, reports and unpublished data gathered in production conditions.
The series will feature actual production figures, qualitative composition of algae biomass and unique problems encountered in large scale production of micro-algae. These results are NOT derived or extrapolated from a limited set of small, well controlled laboratory experiments but were recorded directly from actual commercial production sites .
I came to realize this is actually a rather unique situation. Large scale production data are rarely if ever available for publication to the wider audience.
Either the data have not been attained in operational production settings and publications rely on inflated laboratory settings or demonstration settings. Such publications lack the unforgiving feedback of day to day operational scale and are therefore not real. They fail the test of industrial experience and commercial relevance so should be considered soft. To be handled with caution.
Or the results are real enough but are carefully kept trade secrets to be defended at all costs by commercial enterprises. And who could blame them since a lot of trial and error and burnt cash is involved.
As I am neither restricted nor bound by either, I can reveal all that I know with some secrets to boot.
