a pencil and eraser
scissors
glue
plain white paper or card stock
colored paper or card stock,
including black
colored pencils
markers
crayons
a ruler
a hole punch
double-sided tape
a sponge
How often do you recycle food packaging, wrapping
paper, or magazines? Next time, stop and look! Scrap
paper and cardboard is perfect for making all sorts
of artwork, as youll find out in this book.
If you like a picture in a
magazine, cut it out and save
it! Even black-and-white
newspaper can be turned
into beautiful designs. You
can use the backs of old
envelopes or cardboard boxes
as the background for your
pictures. Ribbons, cupcake
wrappers, and doilies are great
for extra bits of decoration.
LETS MAKE ART!
WHAT YOU NEED
HANDY HINTS
There are templates on PAGES 30-31 to help
you draw some useful shapes, but dont try
to copy everything exactly. Half the fun is
testing ideas of your own!
Before you start, lay down
plenty of newspaper to
protect the surface youre
working on.
If you dont have paper in
the color you want, you can
always paint your own.
Nail clippers are handy for
cutting small paper shapes. Some
craft scissors have a special
zig-zag blade for fancy edges.
To pick up tiny bits of paper like the
circles from a hole punch, lick your
finger and the paper will cling to it.
Work at a size you feel comfortable
with if somethings too tiny to
cut, try doing it bigger.
When you see this
LOGO , you might
want to ask an
adult to help.
Save scraps of paper that
youve cut away theyll be
useful another time!
USE colored tissue paper
to make these batty backgrounds.
BATTY SILHOUETTES
When your paper is full,
draw around a mug, glass,
or roll of tape and cut out
several circles.
Now practice drawing bat
shapes like this one. Make
them small enough to fit inside
your tissue paper circles. Copy
them onto black paper and
cut them out. There are some
templates on p. 30 to help you.
Tear up scraps of tissue
paper and glue them to
a sheet of white paper or
card stock. Keep going
until the paper is covered.
Dont worry if you only
have one or two colors.
You can overlap the pieces
to create dierent shades.
make a
black cat or an
owl to go with
your bats!
Glue a bat to each circle.
Then, arrange them on a
sheet of black paper and
glue them down.
Now practice drawing bat
shapes like these. Make them
small enough to t inside
your tissue paper circles.
Copy them onto black paper
and cut them out. There are
some templates on p. 30 to
help you out!
FANCY FLOWERS
TRANSFORM old SCRAPS of wrapping paper, wallpaper, and
other patterned paper INTO A colorful VASE OF FLOWERS.
Cut out petal shapes and
arrange them in a ower
design, like this.
Here are
a few ways
to make your
flowers:
Overlap some large round
shapes in a circle, then stick
a smaller one in the middle.
Cut out rough, circular shapes
from dierent colored papers
and glue smaller ones on top
of the larger ones.
Cut out eight narrow strips
of paper, all the same length.
Glue two in a cross shape,
then add the others one
by one, like the spokes of
a wheel. Glue a dierent
colored circle in the middle.
Cut some stalks and
leaves from green
paper and glue your
bright bouquet of
owers onto a sheet
of white paper. Finish
with a vase shape in
any color you like.
You can Experiment
by cutting and
layering different
shapes of paper.
You could fold
a sheet of card stock
in half to make a card
and glue your flowers
on the front!
tip
DANGLY DRAGONS
Use scraps of colored cardboard or packaging
to make these friendly fire-breathers.
Cut out a triangle for the
head, about 2 inches
(5 cm) wide at the top.
Theres a template on
p. 30 if you need it.
Glue the triangle onto a piece
of scrap paper, then glue on
smaller shapes, like these, to
create a face. Cut the whole
thing out.
These little
circles of paper
came out of a
hole punch.
Find a piece of ribbon
or yarn and lay it on a
