So many people helped me with this book that it should be considered a joint effort, and I very much appreciate their help and forbearance. Fabulous Florals, a Plumples quilt pattern by Arlene Netten, served as the inspiration and starting point for the quilts. Stephanie Cohen gave me an enormous amount of her time and support, did photography and photo printing on request, made several quilt labels, and provided in-home computer technical support. Joan Bailey McMath proofread numerous versions of the book; she also loaned me her camera at several crucial points, then talked me down when I couldnt make it work. These two women alternated in the dispensing of pep talks. Brian Partin invented the name French braid, which gave a whole new feel to a traditional pattern; named several of the quilts; and graciously pretended that he didnt mind climbing up the big ladder to display them. Lucy Mansfield was the person who talked me into making the quilts into a book. Some days I thanked her, and some days I just rolled my eyes! Eddie Mansfield kept my sewing machines running perfectly, an endless but not thankless task. My co-workers, Edith Matthews and Lynn Kern, were nice to me even when the only words that came out of my mouth, for months on end, were French and braid. Many of my students allowed me to use them as experimental subjects, but Lois Willoughby became addicted to French braid quilts and generously loaned me one for use in this book. And the entire quilting community in Miami has been consistently encouraging and supportive. Thank you all so much. I couldnt have done it without you.
