The answer, surprisingly, is No!, but India Opal Buloni, over the course of the novel, learns to deal with this answer through her experiences and support of a growing circle of friends, all of whom has also suffered some kind of loss themselves. And finally, it is the story of the love between a girl and her dog; a pet that has an uncanny ability to bring kindred spirits together.

Introduction

S ince she published her first novel, Because of Winn-Dixie, which was recognized as a Newbery Medal Honor Book, Kate DiCamillo has been sharing her fine writing style and sensitive stories with us all. Her novels deal frequently with the themes of loss, longing, love, and the importance of finding a place where one belongs and finds contentment. This contentment, such as Opal finds at the end of Because of Winn-Dixie, frees Kate DiCamillos characters to come to terms with their losses, longings, and sadness, and allows them to eventually move on.

STUDENT HANDOUTS

Chapter Activities (in the form of reproducible worksheets) make up the majority of this resource. For each chapter or group of chapters there are BEFORE YOU READ activities and AFTER YOU READ activities.

The BEFORE YOU READ activities prepare students for reading by setting a purpose for reading. They stimulate background knowledge and experience, and guide students to make connections between what they know and what they will learn. Important concepts and vocabulary from the chapter(s) are also presented.

The AFTER YOU READ activities check students comprehension and extend their learning. Students are asked to give thoughtful consideration of the text through creative and evaluative short-answer questions and journal prompts.

Six Writing Tasks and three Graphic Organizers are included to further develop students critical thinking and writing skills, and analysis of the text. The Assessment Rubric is a useful tool for evaluating students responses to the Writing Tasks and Graphic Organizers.
