Introduction
Welcome to Food Fun! We created this baking activity book to help you learn how to bake; nerd out with science using food; and, most important, have fun. (Bonus: lots of delicious things to eat along the way!)
The recipes, experiments, and activities in this book are all kid tested and kid approved. This means that a group of more than 12,000 volunteer kid testers from around the country have baked or done every single one of the recipes, experiments, and activities in this book. They gave us suggestions for improvements and told us whether theyd make them again or recommend them to their friends.
This book is for you to write in, draw in, and make completely your own. Food is a wonderful way to get creative, to get messy, and to learn. Youll probably make some mistakes, but thats OK (theyll still be delicious). Be proud of all that you accomplish!

Understanding the Symbols in This Activity Book
To help you find the right recipe, experiment, or activity for you, we use a system of symbols to quickly show the type of cooking required:
= requires use of knife
= requires use of microwave
= requires use of oven
= no knives or heat required
Rate the Recipes
As you make each recipe, take notes (or make drawings) on the page. When youre finished, rate the recipe! Pick the emoji that best describes what you thought of the recipe and circle it or color it in.
How to Read the Recipes in This Activity Book
Cooking from a recipe is actually a three-step process, and the recipes in this workbook are written to reflect that, with three distinct sections. Bonus: Each recipe is accompanied by additional information or an activity to grow your food and cooking knowledge.
Prepare Ingredients
Start with the list of ingredients and prepare them as directed. Wash fruits and vegetables. Measure ingredients, melt butter, and chop ingredients as needed. You can use small prep bowls to keep ingredients organized.
Gather Baking Equipment
Once all your ingredients are ready, put all the tools you will need to follow the recipe instructions on the counter.
Start Baking!
Its finally time to start baking. Any ingredients that need to be prepped at the last minute will have instructions within the recipe itself. Dont forget to have fun!
Food for Thought
Food and baking are about SO MUCH more than just whats happening in your pot or pan or bowl. Each recipe has a special Food for Thought section to inspire you to expand your knowledge and learn something new!
Kitchen Math
You can get carried away learning all the math behind measuring. Memorize the following rules and you will be all set.
3 teaspoons = 1 tablespoon
16 tablespoons = 1 cup
16 ounces = 1 pound
2 cups = 1 pint
4 cups = 1 quart
4 quarts = 1 gallon
Kitchen Safety Tips
Wash your hands before cooking and after touching raw meat or eggs.
Knives and stoves can be dangerous. Always ask for help if youre in doubt.
Assume that anything on the stove or in the oven is hot. Use oven mitts.
Never let ingredients you eat raw (such as berries) touch foods you will cook (such as eggs).
Always turn off the stovetop and oven when youre done cooking.
