Introduction: Welcome to the Book Which Will Save Your Life!
Are you a vegan? Are you thinking about becoming a vegan? Or are you a die-hard meat-lover who just wants to learn more about veganism? No matter where you are in your veganism journey, reading this book may save your life!
Right now, how much do you know about vegan life?
For sure, you may have heard this term already. You may have also asked around about how it's like to be a vegan, especially from your vegan acquaintances, friends, and family members. But do you really know what it means to be a vegan? If not, read on! Even if you are already familiar with veganism, this book will provide you with a lot of insights which may help convince you to take that courageous step to change your life for the better.
Although a lot of people want to make a change to veganism, there are a lot of reasons which are holding them back. Aside from learning more about being a vegan, we will also be going through these reasons and some helpful advice on how to overcome them. Basically, this book is for vegans, people who are leaning towards plant-based eating, people who have started their veganism journey but are struggling, or those who are just curious but open-minded about the vegan lifestyle.
After reading this book, you can apply the knowledge and strategies to your own life in order to take that first step into this healthy and beneficial lifestyle. Even if you've been a vegan for some time now, this book can help refresh your knowledge about veganism and keep you motivated to stick with the lifestyle you have chosen for yourself.
Just like any other journey in life, veganism comes with its own challenges. But the good news is that with enough encouragement, will, and motivation, you can stick with your decision and enjoy the long-term benefits in the future!
One thing you shouldn't expect from this book is for me to speak from a meat eater's perspective. I am a vegan, I'm proud to be one, and I would like to share everything I've learned along the way. So even if you take a step or two back, don't worry about feeling bad. Veganism is all about listening to your needs, your body, and your values. With that being said, let's begin!
Chapter 1: Myth Busting
One of the main reasons why people are reluctant to go vegan is because there are SO MANY myths surrounding veganism. Although there is no truth to these myths, a lot of people still believe them, especially when they hear them from people whom they know and trust. So, if you want to become a vegan, you must start learning the truth about this healthy lifestyle choice.
This chapter is all about myth busting. Here are the most common myths circulating out there and the truths behind them. The more you learn about veganism, the more you can make an informed decision on whether you should start becoming one or not. Then you can start sharing the truth about veganism to others in order to help out in your own way.
Myth 1 - All vegans are Weirdos and Hippies
This is one of those myths which makes us vegans roll our eyes (admit it, if you're a vegan, you probably rolled your eyes too!). Sure, this may have been somewhat true about 40 or 50 years ago, but today, this is nothing but a myth! Today, vegans exist among all professions, ages, cultures, genders, and nations. You can see us everywhere, and most of us are neither hippies (there's nothing wrong with being a hippie though) nor weirdos. There are even a lot of celebrities who have already chosen to become vegan! Some of these vegan celebrities include:
Ellen Page , a longtime vegan who isn't afraid to speak to the public about the reasons for her lifestyle choice.
Alicia Silverstone , a vegan who also happens to be an animal lover.
Ariana Grande who firmly believes that a plant-based, whole-food diet can help everyone live longer and healthier lives.
Ellen DeGeneres, who is a very outspoken animal advocate and who has the power and drive to bring awareness of veganism to a mainstream audience.
Joaquin Phoenix who has been a vegan since he was 3 years old and who has encouraged a lot of other celebrities to become vegans too.
These are just a few vegan Hollywood celebs you should know about. Other big names include Miley Cyrus, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Mayim Bialik, Casey Affleck, Sia, Stevie Wonder, Pamela Anderson, Peter Dinklage, James Cameron, and so on.
Myth 2 - Veganism is Difficult and Expensive
A lot of people believe this so they think that they can't really afford to become vegans. But when you think about it, veganism isn't that different from other diets. We all have to buy ingredients for dishes, order meals at restaurants, and purchase food items for our snacks.
But as long as you don't go for the "fancy stuff," being a vegan is actually a lot cheaper! For instance, if you're worried about spending too much on meals at restaurants, then eat most of your meals at home and only dine out on special occasions. When it's time to start shopping for food, shop smart!
Purchase fruits and vegetables which are in season. Whole grains and legumes come at a reasonable price. If you want to include seeds and nuts in your diet, go for the shelled variety as these are a lot cheaper. It's all about knowing what to buy when you're on a budget.
Myth 3 - Veganism is Just a New Trend
The 1st of November is World Vegan Day, and this healthy lifestyle has been around since the year 1944. Although the term "veganism" was coined in that year, people in the ancient Eastern Mediterranean and Indian societies have been practicing the concept of veganism. If you need more proof of this, even Gandhi mentioned veganism in his teachings.
Famous as Gandhi was, this part of his life isn't really emphasized. This is probably because most of those who live in India are vegans and vegetarians anyway. So maybe it was just assumed that he was one too. But for Gandhi, he made this lifestyle choice consciously, and his reason was ethical in nature.
