About the Authors
M y husband, Mark, and I owe many, many thanks to all the people who helped bring this book into existence: to Hay House for seeing its possibilities; to Jean Naggar for representing us; to Larry Taubman for his guidance; to Suzanne Duroux for her help shaping this project; to the best co-workers in the worldAmy Sarkie, Mary Lorentsen, Jane Otway, Patty Perkins, Lisa Kelley, and Rochelle Manuelwho not only gave input on the book but have made Madison Skin and Laser what it is; to Dr. John Olerud, Chairman of Dermatology at the University of Washington, for his understanding; to our friends and colleagues at Hillis Clark Martin and Peterson for their tolerance; to Brant, Gavin, and Zan for their interest and patience; to Frances McPherson for the encouragement and generosity that gave us the breathing room to undertake this; and most important of all, to Brenda Partridge for her incredible skills, commitment, and work ethicwhich she gave to us on her own time.
Y our Best Face provides solid medical information that can help you look vital and attractive for your age. I hope that it will enhance your own unique beauty, style, and sexuality, no matter how old you are. Getting older may bring a few lines to your face, but it can also make you more comfortable with yourself as you appreciate that you have a whole new type of wisdom and beauty.
O UR O WN B EAUTY: M Y P HILOSOPHY
I believe that all people are beautiful, whether we have black, blonde, red, or chestnut hair; generous or slim figures; ebony, olive, or ivory skin. The important thing is to understand and be confident in our own beauty, in our own unique way, with our own sense of style.
Beauty is so much more than a two-dimensional image on the front of a magazineits a wonderful and unpredictable blend of confidence, inner strength, physicality, sensuality, facial features, spirit, and personality. After all, each one of us has met physically beautiful people who seemed to become uninteresting and plain over time because their inner qualities didnt match their exteriors; conversely, we know people who initially didnt seem attractive to us but who grew beautiful because of who they were.
Think, for example, of CNN correspondent Christiane Amanpour, Andrea Jung (the CEO of Avon), Oprah Winfrey, Jennifer Lopez, or Rosie ODonnellnone of these women look alike, and yet theyre all beautiful. Theyre beautiful because of their vitality, their confidence, and their comfort with who they are, which enhances their physical beauty.
