F OREWORD
Dr. Denese, whats your secret? How do you stay so young? How do you keep your skin so ageless?
I have been asked those questions many times. My answer is always the same. My secret is science.
I have always believed that scientific knowledge can conquer nearly any skin problem. Scientific knowledge is the keystone of my success in helping my patients achieve results in fighting the effects of aging. Medical science, not marketing, has guided me as I created my skin-care products. But even before that, it was scientific knowledge that helped me escape the bleakness of my childhood in communist Hungary.
I was born in Hungary during the height of communism. Life was bleak for a kid during that timeno TV, no fashion, no shopping, no parties, no dances, no movies, no gamesnothing.
We had two hours of television broadcasting a night, one channel only, and it was mostly heavily censored news. We had one hour of pop music a week, on Saturdays between three and four oclock. Life as we knew it stopped for that hourwe were glued to the radio listening to the Beatles, in awe for that one magical hour each Saturday afternoon.
Shopping was not much fun either. The stores carried a choice of one kind of skirt: pleated in navy. Your choice was to buy one or not to buy one. Blouses were white or yellow and they rarely had the right size for a teenager, so shopping was out.
Food shopping was equally unexciting. You cannot even fathom what a grocery shop looked like during the height of communism. I lived next door to one as a child and I went there at least twice a day, so I remember it as if it was yesterday. It was a simple rectangular store with no middle aisles since there was nothing to display. No fruits and no vegetables except potatoes, cabbage, and onions. One wall was covered with uniform bags of government-brand flour and sugar. The opposite wall had bags of salt, a few bottles of oil and vinegar. There was one brand of soap and a single brand of shampoo and one brand of toothpaste and Vaselineno creams, no makeup, no deodorant, no laundry detergent, nothing else. In the front of the store, chunks of lard and one type of cheese lined the small shelf. The milk and butter came at eight in the morning. I knew that because a line immediately formed outside the store and stretched around the corner until all the goods were sold. Bread came at noon. The line was even longer then. When I was five, it was my job to run and stand in line as soon as possible because bread sold out as fast as it came. It may sound odd, but I loved standing in line for bread. At five years old, it made me feel like a real contributor to the household.
