Maps, Books & Internet Resources
You can buy island maps and Hawaiiana books at tourist shops and major chain bookstores like Borders (808-877-6160; 270 Dairy Rd., Kahului), near the airport in central Maui, or Barnes & Noble (808-662-1300; 325 Keawe St., Lahaina) in West Maui. Smaller nonprofit bookstores inside visitor centers at Haleakala National Park also stock a good selection of maps and books.
Maps
The simple maps included in this book are sufficient for most dayhikes. Consult the introductory Permits & Maps sections at the beginning of each regional hiking chapter earlier for details. Developed hiking trails in coastal resort areas, such as Kapalua, Wailea, and Kihei, feature map signboards along the trails, and resorts may offer free map brochures for hikers. Hawaiis Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) distributes the Maui Recreation Map , a shaded relief map that shows many of the islands public parks, trails, and campgrounds. You can pick up a free copy of this map from the Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW) office in Wailuku (see ). If youre planning any overnight or backcountry trips on Maui, topographic maps may be helpful, especially for following less traveled and infrequently maintained island trails. Be aware that handheld GPS devices do not always function on Maui, especially in dense forest cover or in cloudy weather, so consider bringing a compass, too. Every hike described in this book lists GPS coordinates for the start and end points of the trail, as well as waypoints for some milestones along the trail that are likely to be useful to hikers. All coordinates are listed in decimal degrees.
National Geographics TOPO! series offers digital topographic maps scaled at 1:24,000, 1:100,000 and 1:500,000 on CD-ROM. The TOPO! Hawaii mapping product ($49.95) includes National Geographics outdoor recreation mapping software, which lets you customize and print your own trail maps. This mapping software is compatible with both Macs and PCs. It also allows maps to be uploaded to most handheld GPS receivers. Youll probably need to purchase this mapping product before your trip to Maui, as it is rarely stocked at bookstores or by outdoor outfitters either in Hawaii or on the U.S. mainland. To order any National Geographic mapping product, visit www.natgeomaps.com or call (800) 437-5521.
