Dear Friend,

I am thrilled to share with you my recipes for the most delicious and healthy smoothies in my new book, Dr. Susans Smoothies for Life . I have been developing smoothie and shake recipes for years, both for my patients as well as for my family. As a wife and mother, I wanted to create smoothies that my family would enjoy and thrive on. I am also a medical doctor specializing in the field of alternative medicine so healthy diet and nutrition has always been a very important emphasis in my medical practice.

I have found that smoothies are a wonderful way to provide my patients with great tasting and easily digestible meals and snacks that are full of many essential nutrients. Regular smoothie meals are very beneficial in restoring and maintaining their health and well-being.

My patients who were trying to shed unwanted pounds found that smoothies were ideal as part of their weight loss program. I have also had patients use these liquid meals to support their level of energy and vitality, enhance their sports performance or simply provide them with highly nutritious, easy to make meals for their active and busy lives. My smoothies also have cosmetic benefits, since their nutrients promote radiant, glowing skin and thick, healthy hair. I know that you will benefit greatly from using my smoothie recipes, too!

My patients have also shared with me that their family members benefitted from using smoothies, too. Many of them have told me that their significant others have lost weight; their blood pressure and cholesterol levels have gone down; their immune functions have improved with fewer colds, flus, and allergies; and even arthritis and joint pains have disappeared.

Using nutrient-rich smoothies and shakes on a regular basis can help to heal many common health issues including heart disease, high blood pressure, weak immunity, obesity, hormonal imbalance, autoimmune diseases, and a host of other illnesses.

Many patients have also told me that their children are healthier and have fewer school absences due to colds and other infections. You and your family can enjoy all of these health benefits by including smoothies in your meal plans, too!

My own family has benefitted from drinking smoothies. I have been making smoothies at home since my daughter was a little girl. I have greatly enjoyed working with so many wonderful fresh fruits and vegetables in developing my recipes, especially all of the great seasonal and year-round produce in the San Francisco Bay Area where I live which flourishes in our temperate climate. Even the fruit trees that grow in my yard contribute delicious lemons, pears, plums lemons and apples for my smoothies. On my walks, I pass by beautiful pomegranate and orange trees. These gorgeous fruits are an inspiration for my smoothie recipes.

I have also developed recipes for many different types of homemade nondairy milks that I use in my smoothie recipes as well as for cooking and baking. I love that they are fresh and highly nutritious as well as very tasty. Homemade seed and nut milks are also quick and easy to make! While you can readily purchase premade nondairy milks in health food stores and most supermarkets to use in your smoothies, you may want to try making the homemade versions. I have included several of these recipes in this book.

My smoothie recipes are very healthy, nutrient-rich and delicious, as well as quick and easy to prepare. I have found that anything too complicated doesnt work for most people. Many of us lead full, active lives and do not have the time to spend endless hours in the kitchen. Their ease of preparation is one of the great benefits of smoothies and shakes. Dont be afraid to modify the recipes if you want to change the proportions and flavors to suit your taste. I do this myself when I read cookbooks and want to adapt the dishes to my own tastes.

How I Organized This Book

In the first section of my book, I have included much useful information about the health and nutritional benefits of smoothies, as well as the benefits of these blenderized meals for supporting healthy digestion.

In the second section, I focus on the smoothie ingredients and how they benefit your overall health: In addition, I also discuss how to select smoothie ingredients and share with you great tips for using the ingredients. I discuss how eating for your body type can help you choose the smoothie recipes that are best for you as well as how to keep your pantry stocked with smoothie basics.

In the following section, I share how to best use the blender to make smoothie. You will also find creative tips for making the best quality smoothies and storage of smoothies, if you have leftovers.

Then, I share with you important, in-depth information about the health and nutritional benefits of the main ingredients that I have used in creating most of the smoothie recipes in this book. When you read through this section, you may want to focus on your personal health needs to help you select the smoothie ingredients that can provide the greatest benefits for you and your family.

The recipe section is the best of all! It contains many delicious smoothie recipes that I have developed for you to enjoy. I have included a wide range of scrumptious and healthy smoothies. You will find recipes for fruit smoothies, vegetable smoothies, green smoothies, high protein smoothies and specialty smoothies. You can use them as delicious meal replacements and snacks, for cleansing and detoxification programs and even luscious desserts and healthy treats!

You will find the smoothie recipes easy to follow and simple and quick to make. Each recipe has been taste tested to ensure wonderful flavor and texture as well as provide the maximum nutritional benefits.

As a doctor specializing in alternative medicine, I have always focused as much on helping my patients to have a positive mind and attitude as much as on their physical health. I have included a number of my favorite inspirational sayings throughout the book to enhance your joy and pleasure while making smoothies.

I love smoothies because they are not only delicious, but are full of so many essential nutrients. You can use my smoothies as snacks or complete meal replacements since most of them contain a combination of carbohydrate, protein, essential fatty acids, vitamins and minerals. They have so many health benefits for you that I want to summarize them in this section.

  • Smoothies are made by using a blender to liquefy whole fruits, vegetables, nondairy milk, nuts, protein powder and other ingredients. I include the entire fruit and vegetable in my drink recipes, giving you the benefit of their fiber, pulp and even the seeds. This provides a much wider range of nutrients than drinking juices alone. Creating smoothies in a blender can be done in just a few minutes.
