Preface
Creating a dictionary for the computer world is like trying to swim through quicksand. As quickly as I found terms and incorporated them into the manuscript, new terms came along and replaced the ones already rapidly vanishing.
Nonetheless, this Dictionary of Data Communications is as complete and relevant as possible. The dictionary is not only for the computer technician nor entirely for the neophyte. Instead, this book should be used as a reference, a springboard to learn the ever-changing technological environment around us, especially in data communications. Because of this, I have included a list of accessible Web sites and addresses to discover the most up-to-date terms available. It you find discrepancies or updates, please let me know and I will incorporate these newer terms into future editions.
Now, and most important, I would like to thank certain people without whom this book would not have become a reality: Debbi Callahan, Mabel Castilla, and Leo Montes. I would like to thank Anne Grant for cleaning out the flotsam and jetsam. I would also like to thank Teresa Quick for all the work she put in to keeping track of the loose ends and slippery details. As you know, every technical writer and computer user has a guru without whom the world would collapse and the sky would fall; I would like to thank Grace McLoughlin for her expertise and insight. The woman's a genius - really.
Finally, I would like to thank Barbara Craig of the Glenlake Publishing Company for all of her assistance and for having the patience of a saint: Thank you for waiting.
