Without considerable help, my wish to produce a new edition and translation of Viaud's Naufrage would have remained nothing but an intriguing fantasy.
My first acquaintance with the work was in Elizabeth Griffith's quaint translation on microcard in the microfilm center of Auburn University's library. Its curator, Harmon Stratton, has been unfailingly helpful in finding arcane materials for me.
My subsequent conviction that Naufrage was more than an exercise in harrowing fiction came from serendipity. While searching for material on the economy of British West Florida in a castle in Scotland, I happened upon George Swettenham's letter to James Grant describing Viaud's rescue. I am most grateful to Oliver Russell of Ballindalloch Castle, Banffshire, for allowing me access to the Grant Papers.
The wise and critical eye of Dr. Robert Rea of Auburn did much to improve my introduction to this edition of Naufrage. James P. Dyehouse of the University of West Florida possesses intimate local knowledge of the area where Viaud claimed to have wandered, and he detected several implausibilities in the Frenchman's tale, which would otherwise have escaped me.
Thanks to Dr. James Servies's encyclopedic command of Floridian bibliography, my attention was drawn to the valuable testimony of Roger Lamb about Viaud's adventures.
I am grateful too to the staffs of various libraries and depositories in Europe: the British Library, London; the Public Record Office, Kew; the Taylorian Institute, Oxford; the Municipal Archives, Bordeaux; the Bibliothque Nationale, Paris; and the archives of the Department of Charente-

Infrieure at La Rochelle. Similarly courteous and helpful were the staffs of the Louisiana State Archives, Baton Rouge, the Center for Louisiana Studies, Lafayette, and the New York Historical Society.
My research trips to England, France, Scotland, Louisiana, and New York would have been severely hampered had it not been for financial assistance from the Auburn University Humanities Fund and from an Auburn University grant in aid. The work of translation was speeded by Auburn's allowing me a professional improvement leave in the fall of 1987.
