About the Book

Peter Cook and Dudley Moore were Britains greatest double act. Brought together in Beyond The Fringe, the finest revue ever seen in the West End or on Broadway, they reinvented the sketch show in Not Only...But Also, created a comic duo, Pete & Dud, to rival Laurel & Hardy, and tore it all apart as Derek & Clive.

They were the first comedians with rock star status. Their influence is immense. They inspired several generations of comics, from Monty Python to Ricky Gervais, yet their partnership fell apart when they were barely in their forties. Dudley went to Hollywood, where he became an unlikely sex symbol. Peter remained in Hampstead, his occasional brilliant cameos punctuated by increasingly long periods of semi-retirement. Peter died in his late fifties. Dudley died in his late sixties.

Neither of them fulfilled their vast potential, so the saying goes, but they still achieved far more than most comedians can even dream of. They bridged the British class divide. They were stars in America and Australia. They made some of the best TV programmes (and a couple of the worst movies) the public had ever seen.

One Leg Too Few is their story. Its the story of an extraordinary partnership a friendship, a relationship, almost at times a marriage. With new interviews with friends and colleagues, teachers and relatives, it charts the rise and fall and enduring legacy of a double act that changed the British sense of humour.

ONE LEG TOO FEW

One of my favourite sketches I wrote very early on, when I was about eighteen. It was called One Leg Too Few, about a one-legged man auditioning for the part of Tarzan. Its a bit alarming that I wrote it at eighteen. I dont think Ive written anything better since.

(Peter Cook, Success Story, BBC, May 1974)

PETER:Now, Mr Spiggott, you are, I believe, auditioning for the part of Tarzan.
DUDLEY:Right.
PETER:Now, I couldnt help noticing, almost at once, that you are a one-legged person.
DUDLEY:You noticed that?
PETER:I noticed that, Mr Spiggott. When you have been in the business as long as I have you get to notice these little things almost instinctively. Now, Mr Spiggott, you, a one-legged man, are applying for the role of Tarzan a role which traditionally involves the use of a two-legged actor.
DUDLEY:Correct.
PETER:And yet you, a unidexter, are applying for the role.
DUDLEY:Right.
PETER:A role for which two legs would seem to be the minimum requirement.
DUDLEY:Very true.
PETER:Well, Mr Spiggott, need I point out to you where your deficiency lies as regards landing this role?
DUDLEY:Yes, I think you ought to.
PETER:Need I say with overmuch emphasis that it is in the leg division that you are deficient.
DUDLEY:The leg division?
PETER:Yes, the leg division, Mr Spiggott. You are deficient in it to the tune of one. Your right leg I like. I like your right leg its a lovely leg for the role. Thats what I said when I saw it come in. I said A lovely leg for the role. Ive got nothing against your right leg. The trouble is neither have you
