A Clockwork Orange, Starring Mick Jagger
Anthony Burgesss 1961 novel A Clockwork Orange became a cult classic among Englands disaffected youthone of whom was the Rolling Stones Mick Jagger. In 1968, it was announced that novelist Terry Southern would be adapting Clockwork for the screen, and Jagger wanted the lead role of gang leader Alex, who commits acts of ultra-violence around London. Many of Jaggers famous friends signed a petition and sent it to Southern (who was planning to cast someone else). But the project stalled until Stanley Kubrick took the helm, fresh off his sci-fi hit 2001: A Space Odyssey. Kubrick adapted the screenplay and agreed to direct only if Malcolm McDowell was cast as Alexand in 1971, A Clockwork Orange made McDowell a star.
Update: In 2017, that petition went to auction, where it was expected to sell for $25,000. Among the star-studded signers: all four Beatles. Their plan was for Jagger to star and for John, Paul, George, and Ringo to write and perform the music.
Like most people, when I was a little kid I loved the circus. My favorite part: the sideshow. For me, all those bizarre characters and fascinating oddities relegated to the side of the main show were the main show. That started a lifelong love of all things weird, bizarre, and strangeright up to today.
I also really liked hearing the ringmasters voice reverberating throughout the big top, kind of like this (ahem): Ladies and gentleman, boys and girls, children of all ages! Welcome one and all to the 33rd edition of the Bathroom Reader:
And lets not forget the trapeze artists. I was mesmerized by how gracefully they flipped through the air from one to another. I even had a dream of flipping through the air like that myself. (That lasted all of 15 seconds.) Instead, here I am flipping through the manuscript of our latest masterpiece from the safety and comfort of my captains chair.
Its a fun one to flip through, tooespecially if you are fond of weirdos. Youll read about the man who holds the world record for most pairs of underwear put on in one minute (and the man who broke that record). Or the oddball artist whose work,
