Prescott: summary, description and annotation

We offer to read an annotation, description, summary or preface (depends on what the author of the book "Prescott" wrote himself). If you haven't found the necessary information about the book — write in the comments, we will try to find it.

Prescott was founded in 1864 as the territorial capital of Arizona. In 1900, the business center burned to the ground, but the courthouse in the town square was saved, and the burned-out areas former wooden buildings were replaced by brick structures. Because the closest interstate highway is more than 30 miles away, much of Prescotts history and sense of community have been preserved, and historical districts abound. The local chamber of commerce refers to Prescott as Everybodys Hometown. It is also known as the Christmas City of Arizona and holds an annual Christmas parade, with appropriate courthouse lighting.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

I would never have started writing a book about Prescott postcards without the encouragement and suggestions of my late friend Dr. William Bill Bork (19062005). I first came in contact with Bill through an article he wrote in the Prescott Courier on Harold Brisley, who was the first publisher of Prescott postcards. Bill was a retired academic, a local historian, and a collector of old postcards of Prescott. We both had traveled the world in our younger years and had much in common. We had many enjoyable afternoon chats about Prescott postcards and Prescott history. His father had been closely involved as a publisher of postcards for the Corbin and Bork Pharmacy and the Owl Drug Store.

When Bill passed away, I lost interest in completing my postcard book. But when a publishing offer came from Jared Jackson at Arcadia Publishingand with the constant encouragement and editing ability of my wife, Virginiathe book finally became a reality.

All of the postcards in this book are from the authors collection, and the publisher and photographer of each one is provided when known.

EXECUTION OF MEXICAN MURDERERS, NO. 2 AND NO. 3. Card No. 2 shows the men standing, and card No. 3 shows them hanging. The hanging took place on July 23, 1903, in an enclosure east of the courthouse in the presence of approximately 100 witnesses. The men executed were Elijo Hidalgo and Francisco Rentezia. They had murdered Charles Goddard and Frank Cox at Goddard Station. The punishment was enacted for the most horrible and unprovoked murder of two innocent men. This was the first hanging to take place in Prescott since 1898 when Fleming Parker was hanged for the murder of Lee Norris. After a prayer, the two prisoners rose, and at this time their hands and feet were bound, and black caps were pulled over their heads. The nooses on their necks were adjusted, and Sheriff Roberts pulled the lever. Just before the trap dropped from beneath them Hidalgo said: Adios amigos! Adios everybody! The photographs were taken from one of the courthouse windows. (Both, published by Brisley Drug Company.)
