Foreword

by Chuck Runyon

Anytime Fitness Cofounder, Self Esteem Brands CEO

O ne benefit of being an entrepreneur and franchisor is that Ive had a courtside seat to human success and failure. Ive done my best to remain both a student and a teacher throughout my career, and I could fill volumes with what Ive learned over my three decades in business. But one question has always nagged me:

In franchisingand in lifehow can you accurately predict who will succeed and who will fail?

My particular frame of reference is the fitness industry, where youd think it would be easy to forecast a persons success based on their dedication and work ethic. But it isnt.

Early in my career, I was a membership salesperson and gym owner. I sold literally thousands of gym memberships to every kind of person on the planet. I watched people of all ages, shapes, sizes, education levels, and life experiences join a gym with the best intentionsthey wanted to lose weight, gain muscle, train for events, or look their best for a special event, like a wedding or reunion. They all had access to the same weights, cardio machines, group exercise classes, and personal trainers. Yet some achieved their fitness goals while others didnt. People whom I expected to fail would surprise me. Others whose success I would have staked my life on would quit and never come back.
