T o Andrew, you carry ideas in your head, our kids on your shoulders and always the kindest of dreams in your heart .

There are moments when the heart is generous, and then it knows that for better or worse our lives are woven together here, one with one another and with the place and all the living things .

Introduction

O ur farm life began in 2006, the year terrorists had humble toiletries banned from aircraft, Cyclone Larry peeled the Queensland banana crop, and Norway began building the Svalbard Global Seed Vault in case of agricultural Armageddon, which, unfortunately, has since sprung a leak due to a melting glacier. With husband Andrew recovering from Sarcoidosis, a disease that confounds even the medicos on Greys Anatomy, we hired a giant bug-out bag of a removal truck, packed three kids under six and a crate of stuffed animals in the car and set about creating a life on the land. I was thirty-seven, Andrew forty-one, and we were getting out of Dodge, hunting the simple life, ready to raise the one, three and five-year-old free range .

We were ready to grow and smell the roses .
