It was a beautiful March day in Scottsdale, Arizona, the city Tony Maxwell had moved to a few years ago. It was sunny, not a cloud in the sky and 72 degrees. Tony got out of his 2015 convertible Ferrari Italia 458 and walked into Starbucks. The Starbucks was really busy; it was so busy in fact, that it was about a ten-minute wait for coffee. No problem for Tony, however. He had all the time in the world. Life was good, and he was enjoying every minute of it, even a wait in line for coffee. He was the ultimate optimist, and it had served him well in life.
Inch by inch he made his way to the front of the line. At the counter, he decided to splurge from his regular dark roast drip coffee. Ill take a grande, extra hot, extra shot, caramel macchiato, please.
The young woman at the counter took his payment and apologized in advance, saying, Im sorry, but one of our baristas called in sick so, it will be a few extra minutes.
No problem at all, Tony said. He turned away and moved to the side of the counter to wait. He was flipping through his phone, answering the many texts he wakes up to from his many business partners around the world.
He glanced over to his right and saw a young man, maybe 27 years old, looking intensely at his computer. Tony is always looking for new business partners and this guy looked like he was serious about something, so he decided to strike up a conversation.
Excuse me, Tony said. Do you mind if I ask what you are working on? You seem so engaged.
The young man looked up to see Tony standing over him. He figured Tony was about 45 years old, and he figured exactly right. He seemed nice enough, so he responded. Uh, sure. Yeah, so Im watching training videos on the back end of our website. Trying to learn the new business I just got into.
Oh yeah, a new business? What kind of business are you in?
The young man felt that reluctant fear he gets when people ask him the question. He just never knew how they were going to respond. He knew that it could go either way, but he spits it out anyway. I am in a network marketing company.
You are? How is it going? Tony asked.
I just started about three months ago, and Im trying to learn how to do it right. So I guess it isnt going that well yet. I know I just need to learn the secret. Get the key to unlocking success.
Tony remembered one of his favorite quotes. When the student is ready, the teacher appears.
Thats interesting that you are in network marketing. I am too, Tony offered.
You are? the younger man asked.
I am. Its great. Ive been in it a while, though.
What company are you in? the young man asked. Tony told him and then asked the same question of him. Tony was familiar with the company.
Im Tony, by the way. What is your name? Tony extended his hand. The young man stood up and shook Tonys hand. Im Keller.
Cool name.
Yeah, my mom named me after my grandfather. Its unique. He sat back down. Looking up, he asked, So do you do network marketing full time?
I have a grande, extra hot, extra shot, caramel macchiato, for Tony, the barista shouted. Tony turned and grabbed the cup and then brought his attention back to Keller.
Yes, Ive been full time since about six months after I started. So almost 27 years.
Wow, Keller said admiringly. I would love to be able to do that.
You can. You absolutely can. A thought flashed through Tonys mind. And I can teach you. He knew that Keller was in another company and he had no intentions of trying to get him to move over. He was just feeling... generous. The kid just seemed cool to him and sounded like he wants to succeed.
