Part 1 - Chapter 1
From a distance, the forty storeyglass fronted building was reminiscent of the 20th Century spaceshuttles. The central tower tapered gracefully to a domed peak andthe lower levels fanned out like wings. It was a familiar sight inWashington DC, and worldwide to everyone with an interest inscience.
That morning, as the rising sunbegan to reflect off the glass, the World Science ResearchAuthority headquarters was already a subdued hub ofactivity.
An estimated ten thousand hopefulapplicants, who had successfully passed the first selection stagesfor positions within the organisation, would pass through themassive double doors during the next few days.
Tymos Ward and his twin sister,Kryslie, joined the steady stream of people walking across thewide, open courtyard from the street. They passed and ignored theoutdoor exhibits provided for tourists without actually looking atthem, but their eyes caught the flashing messages on the 16 frameorganic LED screen that were incorporated into the windows of thebuilding. The message, Welcome to our esteemed applicants, wasscrolling through different world languages, changing every 30seconds.
Then a movement caught Tymossattention, and he looked to see a camera, attached to an extendableboom, scanning the courtyard. A media reporter was standing on anelevated scissor lift platform, talking into a recordingdevice.
I guess its notsurprising that this is a media circus, Tymos musedaloud.
Kryslie, whose attention hadreturned to observing the multitude of ethnic groups representedreplied, Well, it is the first time in forty years that this manypeople from countries in the Imperium have been in one place in theAmerican Convocation at the same time. Definitely a first forWashington.
At least this time, they are all friendly, arent they?
The overwhelmingemotion is excitement, Kryslie told her twin. She hadnt beentrying to pick up subversive thoughts, but as an empath as well asa telepath, she would be more sensitive to such considerations. This is a historic event. The first time that any organisation hasadvertised for applicants on a world wide scale as well as offeringa chance for ordinary people to work on the moon.
Tymos chuckled, The WSRAuniversities may turn out highly trained specialists, but theydont train people for the mundane support roles.
The graduates from the sixAmerican, and twelve foreign, based WSRA universities would all bevying for the senior positions.
Tymos and Kryslie had opted toapply to the entry level invitation via an on-line portal. Theyreceived an applicant number, uploaded a minimal amount of personalinformation, a sketchy outline of their educational background, andplayed up their real experience - without including dates for anyof it. The documents contained carefully inserted power keywordsfor the massive WSRA computers to scan and pick up on. Theirreplies were quick and there had been no error messages relating tothe scarcity of personal information. The message sent to thecontact email contained only the directions relating to the nextphase.
They had successfully distractedthe computer, for what really mattered would be the ability of eachapplicant to do the work required in the various roles. They hadused the educational records created for them when they hadapplied to the WSRA Washington University, seventeen years before, only this time they had not needed to have a personalrecommendation to support them. It was the fact that they hadactually attended the university that they were intending tohide.
During the following months, themillion or so on-going applicants attended sessions at theirnearest WSRA University, undergoing a range of aptitude andpsychological tests that weeded out the less suitable candidates.Having given an address in California, Tymos and Kryslie went tothe Pasadena campus. Those that passed that stage, were asked toundergo a thorough physical examination, to determine if they weresuited to work on the moon.
Only the top point one percent ofthe original millions of candidates were invited to attend theadvanced testing at the WSRA headquarters.
The Ward twins passed through themassive double doors, paying no attention to the cameras andreporters set up just inside. They noticed, in a single glancearound, the two huge wall screens showing scenes from the buildingof the WSRAs Lunar 1 base. Any voice over accompanying the videoswas lost in the babble of hundreds of applicants.
The voice announcement systemwas, however, loud enough to be heard, and the messages beingreplayed every two minutes were for the attendees to check theoverhead boards for directions to the rooms they needed, or torequest help from the uniformed ushers, and to keep proceeding inan orderly and timely fashion. Kryslie and Tymos already knew wherethey were meant to be and how to get there.
Several more news cameras wereset up amidst the crowd. Tymos and Kryslie split up to edge aroundtheir field of view. Together, their dark red hair would drawattention, apart, they were less noticeable amongst the taller, more exotic looking people.
The twins moved back together, but before stepping onto the upward glide-walk, Tymos paused andgave the vaulted entrance hall another, longer look. Being therewas a bitter sweet experience. For although the year was 2095 andTymos himself looked only to be in his mid-twenties, he had been inthis very place when it had still been just a convention centre. Hehad witnessed the World Peace Treaty being signed in 2057, ending aparticularly nasty war between the Eastern Alliance (now referredto as the Imperium) and the Americans. He had also been there a fewdays later when the WSRA and the United World Nations wereborn.
Kryslie sensed her brothersthoughts of that earlier time, and it roused others in herself. Atthat time, she had been a virtual captive in the country of thereal leader of the Eastern Alliance. Shed had a child there, a boyshe had seen only for a brief time, and who would be much hercurrent age and look older than her apparent visual age.
She tugged on her brothers arm.Come on, we have things to do.
Without replying, Tymos obeyedthe suggestion, and together, they stepped onto the glide-walk andbegan to move up. As they rose, keeping their eyes directedupwards, passing the vaulted ceiling of the entrance hall to reachthe next level, Tymos revealed that he had been aware of hissisters thoughts.
I wonder if he ishere.
He wont need to be,Kryslie thought her reply to Tymos. He went to one of the WSRAuniversities.
With a purely mental chuckle,Tymos countered, So did we, but we are here.
