A Way West, R. P. McAlister Family History and Genealogy: summary, description and annotation

We offer to read an annotation, description, summary or preface (depends on what the author of the book "A Way West, R. P. McAlister Family History and Genealogy" wrote himself). If you haven't found the necessary information about the book — write in the comments, we will try to find it.

A Way West, R.P. McAlister Family History and Genealogy, encompasses the history and genealogy of eight families: Brittain, Gibbs, Humble, Keller, McAlister, Perkins, Powers and Steinmetz. These are ancestral links to Raymond Powers McAlister (Ray) and Minnie Gay Humble McAlister (Gay). As a child, I was told stories of connections to passage on the Mayflower, and roles ancestors played in the American Revolutionary War.I learned how a great-grandfather fought in the American Civil War, survived and was left with a disabled hand. A different ancestor also served and kept a journal. My mother let me handle that leather bound diary and the eyeglasses the soldier had worn.A grandfather, an architect, would draw ink drawings for me with his palsied hand. I did not know he was an icon, an architect to the film stars of the early twentieth century, a man who held a distinguished place in Montana and Wyoming history. His wife came West by covered wagon to homestead. Her job as a five-year-old child on that journey was to gather dried buffalo chips, bison dung, which the family burned for their campfires since the plains offered no wood. These are the stories handed down to me. Now I share them with you.

Introduction

When I was a young woman, elder family memberswould on occasion hand me a manila envelope full of documents, or aspiral bound three ring notebook, or a scrapbook full of newsclippings, photos and cryptic messages.

Here are a few of the names genealogistswill likely recognize: Degory Priest, a Pilgrim, one of the firstto die after the Mayflower landing in the new world, Francis Combs[or, Coombs] and Deborah [or, Coombs], and Olive Harvey, known inthe family for her part at the Battle of Bunker Hill during theRevolutionary War.

The ancestors of Raymond Powers McAlister(Ray) and Minnie Gay Humble McAlister (Gay) share a rich historythat encompasses passage on the Mayflower, participation in theAmerican Revolutionary War and the American Civil War. The accountthat follows encompasses the 16th century forward. This history andgenealogy begins with eight family groups. Each family group isdivided into sub-sections representing paternal and maternal links. If your genealogy includes the surnames McAlister, Steinmetz,Brittain, Powers, Humble, Gibbs, Keller or Perkins, plus a numberof other surnames, you may find connections to your own historyhere.

The forefathers and mothers of thesefamilies left their homes on one side of the Atlantic Ocean to comewest to the eastern seaboard of America. Subsequent generationsjourneyed to what is now the Midwestern United States. Intrepidhomesteaders picked up roots again to build lives anew in Montanaand Wyoming. The lure of the west coast captured the hearts of yetanother generation who settled in Oregon, Washington andCalifornia.

A few important notes need to beinterjected. One, the author is not a genealogist. Secondly, thespellings within this history and genealogy are varied and notstandardized. Since geography is important to the family history, when the spelling can be reasonably linked to a known location orperson, it will be followed with [or Name]. Repetitions are theresult of the author having transcribed data from a myriad offamily artifacts and documents. Lastly, as language and societyevolve over centuries, references change. The author, whosepersonal sensibilities are jolted by some of the word and phrasechoices of ancestors, has included documents as they were writtenwithout editing.

Note: the following have been transcribed byMary A. Schultz from earlier documents

The first family group is that of GlennMcAlister, father of Raymond Powers McAlister. The spelling of thegiven name Glenn in various historic documents is either Glen orGlenn. For purposes of this account, the most prevalent spelling,Glenn, has been chosen.
