Lighthouses and Life Saving along the Massachusetts Coast: summary, description and annotation

We offer to read an annotation, description, summary or preface (depends on what the author of the book "Lighthouses and Life Saving along the Massachusetts Coast" wrote himself). If you haven't found the necessary information about the book — write in the comments, we will try to find it.

Lighthouses and Life Saving along the Massachusetts Coast is a unique tribute to the men and women who protected mariners from shipping disasters. With a variety of vintage images from private as well as museum collections,

this rare glimpse into the lives of the dedicated workers who protected thousands of vessels plying the dangerous waters of Massachusetts Bay and Nantucket Sound is a visual journey to an earlier era in our nations history. Author James Claflin combines an extensively researched text with this exquisite collection of many previously unpublished images to tell the story of a state dependent upon its coastal commerce. From Cape Ann to New Bedford, residents of Massachusetts have relied heavily on the sea for employment, trade, and nourishment. The task of lighting and protecting the coasts was taken on by the U.S. Lighthouse Establishment and the U.S. Life-Saving Service. Within these pages, see the Cape Ann lighthouse keeper proudly posed in his uniform, the Cape Cod life savers launching their surf-boat through the breakers toward the shipwreck, and the Boston Bay lighthouse keepers family returning by skiff from their brief excursion to town.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

I would like to thank everyone who loaned photographs for this book and who gave time for interviews. Most importantly, I am grateful to Kathy Ostrander for all her help, including filling in missing images, scanning, and locating important information. Again, as with my first book, it would not have been possible to write this without the resources of the Brick Store Museum and the Kennebunk Free Library. The Kennebunks are so fortunate to have these institutions. The museums archives and collections are amazing and extensive. In addition to the new library and the well-organized collections, the staff, comprised of volunteers Kathy Ostrander, Rosalind Magnuson, and Kathryn Hussey, were very helpful. The resources of the Kennebunk Free Library, especially the York County Coast Star microfilm dating to 1878, the Andrew Walker diaries, and the Maine Collection, were important as well. I am also grateful to Greg Hubbard, who allowed me to draw from the unpublished manuscript we completed.

A. O. Besses Antiques, pictured c. 1930, was built in Kennebunk c. 1880 for the Fairfield family. It was later bought by the water company to allow the construction of a standpipe, seen on the far left. Albert O. Besse operated the antique shop here from 1926 to 1940. In 1945, Besse died in Bridgeton at age 81. Later owners opened the home as a guesthouse called the Three Maple Inn for the large maple trees seen here. Today, Victorian Lighting is located on this site.

In October 1940, the Kennebunk Star reported: Alfred Garrett is making an addition to his house on York Street which will provide a dining room 18 x 18 feet and a kitchen 10 x 23 feet. He is also building 3 cabins in the field at the rear of his house. Garrett expanded the complex until it appeared as it does in this postcard. The front arch, with its row of lights, must have been impressive when lit up at night. He sold the house to the Garry family in 1953.

Pictured c. 1910, this home on the corner of York and Hall Streets once belonged to Woodbury Hall, who had been a stagecoach driver in the Kennebunks. Hall Street is named after him. The home was built or moved to this site after 1875. The women in this view may be members of the Penny family, who lived here in the early 20th century.

The Lafayette Elm was the second-largest elm in the state, at 131 feet tall and with a girth of 17 feet 3 inches. It died from Dutch elm disease and was taken down in the early 1970s. The tree was named for General Lafayette, who visited Kennebunk in 1817 and supposedly had lunch under the elm.
