With a total of four Academy Awards nominations andten Golden Globe Awards nominations, Leonardo finally won a BestActor Golden Globe Award for his movie The Aviator back in 2004 andagain in 2013 for his role in the movie The Wolf of WallStreet.

Like most Hollywooddreamers, Leonardo DiCaprio started his acting career by trying outin TELEVISION commercials before he finally got a recurring role inthe TELEVISION soap opera, Santa Barbara and in the sitcom titledGrowing Pains back in the early 1990s. After a series ofTELEVISION successes, Leonardo then got his film debut in the movieCritters 3 in 1991. This was the start of his famous life in thebig screen of which today includes being a filmproducer.

Young Leonardo

Leonardo Wilhelm DiCaprio was born on November 11, 1974 inLos Angeles, California. His is the only child of Irmelin andGeorge DiCaprio, a former legal secretary and an underground comicartist, producer and distributor of comic books. Leonardos motherwas German and only moved to the U.S with her family in the 1950s.His father was half Italian and half German. The two met in collegeand they named the actor Leonardo because it was said that he firstkicked when his mother Irmelin, was looking at a painting by thefamous Leonardo Da Vinci.

When Leonardo was just oneyear old, his parents divorced and he lived with his mother indifferent parts of the L.A neighborhood while his mom was workinghard to support him. Leonardo went to Seeds Elementary School andthen to John Marshall High School where he dropped out before hissenior year. Then for four years he attended the Los Angeles Centerfor Enriched Studies.

Because of the broken home,Leonardo also spent some of his childhood years in Germany where hewas taken care of by his maternal grandparents, Wilhelm and Helene.This is why Leonardo is able to speak German fluently.

Leonardos Early Acting Career

Leonardo first appeared intelevision in the children sitcom Romper Room when he was just fiveyears old but got cut off because of his disruptive attitude. Hethen proceeded to try for acting commercials. One of which hebegged his mom to take him audition for; the Bubble Gum Yumcommercial. Then when he was fourteen he again landed a commercialfor Matchbox cars. Leonardo first had a lot of trouble finding anagent and one even suggested he change his name into LennyWilliams.

Leonardos first evertelevision role in a sitcom was in the 1990 show The Outsiderswherein he played a Kid Fighting Scout in the pilot episode. Nexthe was casted as Garry Buckman in the sitcom Parenthood for whichhe was nominated for the Young Artist Award for Best Actor in astarring role. Leonardo then got another television series role asMason Campwell in the Day-time drama, Santa Barbara for which heagain got nominated for the Young Artist Award for Best Actor in aday-time series category.

Still in the 1990s,Leonardo also got one episode roles for the series The New Lassieand Roseanne. Then his luck changed when he was casted as a seriesregular in the television Drama, Growing Pains. Here he played ahomeless teenager waif and his co-stars in the series were AlanThicke and Joanna Kerns.

While auditioning for therole in the series Parenthood, Leonardo met then also trying to befamous, Tobey Mcguire, and the two instantly became very closefriends until now. They along with David Blaine, Q-Tip and LukasHaas, called their group the Pussy Pose. They used to drink andchase women and do acting practices together.

Leonardo in the BigScreen

Leonardo DiCaprios first ever movie role was when he playedJosh, one of the main characters in the sci-fi thriller Critters 3.After that his luck came rolling when he got good reviews fromcritics with his role as a son of an abusive father who was playedby the famous Robert De Niro. It was said that De Niro handpickedLeonardo for the role out of the other four hundred who alsoauditioned. Today Leonardo is internationally known and loved bymillions of adoring fans.

1991

Critters 3: You Are WhatYou Eat was the first film Leonardo DiCaprio starred in. It was afilm made for television and he got to work with his then co-starsAimme Brooks, Don Keith Opper and John Calvin. The movie is aprequel to Critters 4 wherein Leonardos character, Josh, alongwith his family fights the rest of the creatures in order tosurvive: however, Leonardo did not reprise his role for thatfilm.

1992

Poison Ivy starred DrewBarrymore and Sharon Stone and Leonardo felt blessed to have aminor role in the movie just because he was able to work with suchbig names in showbiz. The movie is a drama thriller wherein DrewBarrymore played a psychotic youth.

1993

This Boy's Life is one ofthe movies that defines Leonardos successful career today. In themovie for which Robert De Niro stars in, he handpicked Leonardo toplay the role of his abused son, out of the other four hundred whoauditioned. This is also the movie wherein Leonardo started to gainthe critics respect for his acting talents.

His acting in the movieearned him the second place for the New York Critics Circle FilmAward for Best Supporting Actor. The film earned a domestic incomeof over four million dollars and was ranked number ten in the boxoffice.

Leonardo was nineteen yearsold when he auditioned and got the role for Arnie Grape, anautistic teenager of a poor family in the movie Whats EatingGilbert Grape. Johnny Depp, then also starting to gain fame, playedGilbert Grape, Arnies big brother who takes care of him while alsoworking for their family since their mother was incapable ofsupporting the family because she is morbidly obese.

Because of his hard work atplaying an autistic, Leonardo won the Best Supporting Actor Awardsfor the following organizations namely, Chicago Film CriticsAssociation, National Board of Review, National Society of FilmCritics and the New York Film Critics Circle. Leonardo also gotnominated for the Best Supporting Actor role by the Academy Awardsand Golden Globe Awards but lost to Tommy Lee Jones.

1994

The Foot Shooting Party isa short film directed by Annette Haywood Carter about a group ofteens who debate over what is a citizens role for his countryduring the war. Leonardo played a teenager who isnt quite keen onjoining the army and goes into a drinking spree with his buddieswhilst discussing with them his concerns. The run time for themovie is only twenty seven minutes but the director said Leonardoplayed his part truly well.
