- As a way of trying to keep him out of trouble, Johnnys mum bought him his first guitar at the age of 12. It cost $25.
- When he finally emerged from his room as a competent garage rocker, Johnny joined a band. They performed in nightclubs around Florida...
- ...although as he was still underage, he would have to sneak in via the back door and leave after the bands first set!
- After a while the band re-named, calling themselves The Kids . Under this name they started to take off, supporting bands such as The B-52s and artists including Iggy Pop .

- His first wife, Lori, introduced him to Nicolas Cage. Cage advised Depp to pursue a career in acting and contact his agent.
- Depps first major film role - which he obtained by accident - was in the 1984 horror A Nightmare on Elm Street.
- Johnny always chose acting roles which he found interesting rather than those that were huge box office earners.
- Johnnys second film role was initially going to be the 1986 film Thrashin , where he was cast alongside then-fianc Sherilyn Fenn. However, Johnny was dropped by the films producer, a decision he probably came to regret!
- Ironically, the role went to Josh Brolin - who later turned down the role that rocketed Johnnys profile in 21 Jump Street.
- One of Johnnys many collaborations with Tim Burton first came in 1990, when Johnny played the lead role alongside girlfriend Winona Ryder in Edward Scissorhands.
- Johnny has a naked scene fifteen minutes into his role in the mostly-forgotten film Private Resort - but not even that was enough for the movie to warrant good reviews.
- Just when Johnny was about to give up on acting, a script for platoon was posted through his door, advising him to audition for the role of Lerner. He was in fact originally considered for the lead role - however, he was too young and at the time unknown.
- Johnny refused to appear in an episode of 21 Jump Street about a high school student who is murdered because of moral issues.
Work - Part 2
- In 1993, Johnny starred alongside Juliette Lewis and a young Leonardo DiCaprio in Whats Eating Gilbert Grape. He said that he felt so bad having to ridicule Momma that he would often apologise to the actress after filming!
- Although initially a box office failure, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is now considered a cult film. When writer Hunter S. Thompson met with Johnny, he insisted that nobody else would be able to portray him so well. Johnny stayed in Hunters dungeon whilst rehearsing his character and recalls lighting up a cigarette and reading a book in the evenings, only to realise on the sixth night that he was sharing a room filled with gun powder kegs! When he mentioned this, Hunter just responded with a laugh...

- In 2009, Johnny - along with Jude Law and Colin Farrell - agreed to continue filming Heath Ledgers role in The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus . The three actors generously gave their salaries to Heaths daughter Matilda.
- In 2010, Johnny starred alongside Angelina Jolie in the remake of the French film Anthony Zimmer . It had to be shot in just eleven months because Johnny was due to begin filming the fourth instalment of Pirates of the Caribbean .
