Learning a few basic words and phrases is not only polite but also necessary in many of the more rural areas of Tuscany and Umbria. sce and sci are pronounced sh, as in she
All Italian words are stressed on the penultimate syllable unless marked by an accent.
When speaking to strangers, you should always use the polite "lei" third-person form and not the informal "tu," unless it is someone of your same age and status.
