A NOTE ON THE COVER DESIGN PHOTOGRAPHS

June 2003. A note about the photographs Michael Goode used in his striking cover design for The Personal Sessions series.

The central colored photograph of Jane and the lower right and left-hand shots of her and myself were taken by my father, Robert F. Butts, Sr., in Sayre, PA a year or so after our marriage in December 1954. The upper right one of Jane in trance for Seth was taken (among many others) by Rich Conz, a photographer for the Elmira, NY Star-Gazette , while he witnessed Session 508 on November 20, 1969. (See Volume 9 of The Early Sessions .)

I dont know who photographed the young Jane shown on the upper left, but she saved that picture all of those years for me to inherit upon her death in September 1984, when she was 55.

My inventive and versatile father had always taken photographs, and in his later years turned professional, photographing many weddings and other events in the Sayre area (and also Janes and my wedding at the home of my younger brother Loren and his wife Betts in Tunkhannock, PA). To help my father, my mother Estelle trained herself to hand-color his black and white photographs, for color film was not available thenand so she colored Janes portrait. Now I wonder: do my long-deceased parents, and Rich and the unknown photographer of the young Jane, all know that their creativity will grace the covers of a series of books that I so lovingly dedicate to them, as well as to Jane and each reader? I believe that they do, each in his or her own way.

DELETED SESSION

DECEMBER 15, 1980 9:45 PM MONDAY

(Jane felt very relaxed before the session, as she had most of the day: The first day Ive had it made in a month, she said. Still, shed become blue temporarily in the bathroom after supper. She did want to have a session, though. After our meal Id reread some of these late private sessions, and had planned to go over some of those from 1973, but various distractions prevented me from doing the latter.

(The mail was very heavy last week, and Jane still has a batch of Christmas cards to reply to yet, as well as a dozen regular letters, even after answering better than 35 letters.

(Im just waiting, she said at 9:35. Actually my ankles are doing all kinds of things, releasing.... Im so relaxed I could go right to bed.... So could I for that matter.

(As we sat waiting I read to Jane pages 4 and 5 of the private session for October 22, 1973excellent material concerning the contrasts displayed by Janes parents. Seth had discussed her fathers laxness, and her mothers drive toward purpose, power, and control, and how Jane had felt that she must make a choice between the two modes of behavior. Not realizing that she could choose her own independent course. The session and others dating from that time offers very good insights into Janes choice of actions over the years. Well, I guess hes gotten turned on by what you just read, she said nowfor now she felt that Seth was ready to come through. Shed been waiting impatiently for some time for you-know-who to put in an appearance.)

Ruburt should read that session (for October 22, 1973) and ones immediately previous. The attitudes still stand to some important degree. The contrast represented his own interpretation of his private reality, of courseyet they also represent the main issues involved right now in your society at large.

The same issues underlie your own attitudes, the tension between effort and relaxation, discipline and spontaneity has applied, say, in the creative area as far as painting is concerned. Ruburt set out, of course, to handle his own purposes and challenges, but he chose those in the context of your world, so that in encountering them personally he would encounter them for your society as well. In such ways, the species does handle psychological and psychic issues.

Everything I said recently about the disclaimer stands. Be aware, however, of the sudden reassurances from Framework 2. (Also at Prentice) The news program invitation (from ABC) , which places you in a context, however small, of national interestan invitation that you did not court; these, plus many excellent letters of late, should show you of course the beneficial aspects of your work that you can at times overlook (with irony) . You have at the very least a very large extended family, people whose lives you have touched for the better.

The ability to reach people in such a fashion is a gift. The disclaimer itself will be creatively utilizedsomething else that can escape your notice when you become too shortsighted. I am still in the process of trying to teach you both that trust is also a spiritual and physical imperative. It is indeed a condition of biological lifethis of course despite all of your upbringing. That kind of trust is behind all of mans curiosity, for without a trust in the world he would never have the courage to explore it.
