A NOTE ON THE COVER DESIGN PHOTOGRAPHS

June 2003. A note about the photographs Michael Goode used in his striking cover design for The Personal Sessions series.

The central colored photograph of Jane and the lower right and left-hand shots of her and myself were taken by my father, Robert F. Butts, Sr., in Sayre, PA a year or so after our marriage in December 1954. The upper right one of Jane in trance for Seth was taken (among many others) by Rich Conz, a photographer for the Elmira, NY Star-Gazette , while he witnessed Session 508 on November 20, 1969. (See Volume 9 of The Early Sessions .)

I dont know who photographed the young Jane shown on the upper left, but she saved that picture all of those years for me to inherit upon her death in September 1984, when she was 55.

My inventive and versatile father had always taken photographs, and in his later years turned professional, photographing many weddings and other events in the Sayre area (and also Janes and my wedding at the home of my younger brother Loren and his wife Betts in Tunkhannock, PA). To help my father, my mother Estelle trained herself to hand-color his black and white photographs, for color film was not available thenand so she colored Janes portrait. Now I wonder: do my long-deceased parents, and Rich and the unknown photographer of the young Jane, all know that their creativity will grace the covers of a series of books that I so lovingly dedicate to them, as well as to Jane and each reader? I believe that they do, each in his or her own way.

DELETED SESSION

AUGUST 27, 1977 9:52 PM SATURDAY

(Jane lost an eye tooth early this morning, before we got up. It became abundantly clear that she was going to lose the tooth a couple of days ago, as it began to visibly descend from its socket; I could see it wobble in its socket as we ate breakfast Friday morning, and she expected to lose it at any minute. I found this very discouraging, and once again began to question the whole bit about symptoms, recovery, Seth, etc.

(Yesterday we also had two unexpected visitors, as well as a brief call from a young man who had called on us unannounced with a friend, last week. The two women were from Arizona and Massachusetts; the former had flown here to see Jane unannounced. I turned her away at the door with a promise that Jane would call her at the Holiday Inn. Shortly after she left, the second caller, a parapsychologist from a college in Massachusetts, was camping in Pine Valley with her family. I arranged that both women would meet here at 4:00 PM to talk with Jane for an hour before supper time; Sue Watkins was also due that afternoon with some typed material for Psyche which is why I made the arrangement to begin with.

(Jane and I almost had an argument over the setup, though, for I had mistakenly assumed that shed be glad to see everyone at once and get it over with, so wed be free the rest of the day. Instead, Jane was counting on being free for the day and didnt want to see anybody except Sue. I decided that henceforth I would turn visitors away, since I didnt see how I could know in advance whether she felt like seeing anyone or not. I mention these details to show something of our situation re Seths last deleted session on intruders when we want privacy. We havent resolved such dilemmas then, obviously.

(It follows that Jane did keep her tooth during the womens visit, losing it while still in bed early Saturday morning. Strangely, she could eat and chew better with the tooth gone than while she still had it. Im very sensitive to tooth troubles, of course, and probably project some of this upon others; but Janes losing the tooth reminded me of Seths very recent declaration that she might lose more teeth because of the relaxation taking place in her jaws. Well see whether she can retain her two front teeth, which shifted their position at once after the eye tooth dropped out.

(Tonight I didnt know whether it was worthwhile having a session or not. Yet Jane reported more walking changes today; we thought they were good changes, so eventually we sat for the session. I might add that although Seth said losing the teeth was a minor thing, comparatively, it doesnt seem so to us. Also: when Sue arrived, she reported that on her visit to the dentist this afternoon a large cavity was discovered that she didnt know existed. She remarked upon her own beliefs about teethsomething shed had no trouble with for many years.)
