Stone Age site s Doln V st onice is in the P avlo v Hills near the city of Brno in the South Morav ian are a of the Czech R epublic. It is not the only disco very of its kind, sever al o ther Stone Age site s have been f ound in the vicinity of Doln V st onice. Doln Vst onice CZECH REPUBLIC DOLN V ST ONICE, CZECH REPUBLIC Hidden under soil for t ens of thousands of years, Doln V stonice was once a busy camp, inhabited by about 100 Sto ne Age hunters. The settlement here was built around 30 ,000 years ago. Arc haeologists ex cavat ing it hav e found human burials, cer amic fig ures, and the remains of anc ient homes. Prehistoric art Statuettes of fe male bodies have been found at Stone Age site s acro ss Euro pe. They were carved fr om stone or ivo ry or shaped in clay. This figurine fro m Doln Vs tonice date s fro m appro ximat ely 28,000 bce , making it one of the oldest pieces of cera mic art yet to be disc overe d. Bear sculpture Clay was re adily available near Doln Vs tonice. Pe ople used it to mak e m odels of animals, such as this bear. Once sculpte d, the models were bake d in campfire s to make them hard en and keep their shape. An ar chaeologist tak es a sample fr om a human leg bone. The statuette is made of fire d clay. It is 4 in (11 cm) tall. The ske leton on the right was buried with its left elbow ov er the body in the middle. Trip le burial The ske letons of thr ee male teenagers w ere disco vere d at Doln V s tonice. They wer e buried touching each other , alongside necklaces, re d ocher powder, and a mammoth bone. Carbon dating All living things co ntain carbon but, afte r they die, it begins to brea k down. Arc haeologists use carbon dating to find out the age of old bones and other artifacts by measuring how much carbon is left in them. The bears head is held low, with its neck str etched f orwar d. The body on the left was positioned with its arm re aching out.
