Introducing Trail of Broken Wings
I N TRAIL OF BROKEN WINGS , SEJAL BADANI ATTEMPTS TO tell the story of a dysfunctional family trying to deal with the abuse that the father and husband figure had made a part of their lives. The story starts with Sonya receiving the intimation that her father was in a coma and was not expected to live. She decides to go home to be with her family even though she hasnt really kept in touch with her sisters, Marin and Trisha, or her mother, Ranee. Brent, their abuser, now lies in the hospital unable to trouble them, but his past actions have forever marked all the women.
Marin, the eldest daughter, turns out to be an over-achiever with a great career. She and her husband married in an arranged marriage ceremony in which Marin was not given much of a choice. However, both of them love their daughter, Gia. Trisha, the second sister, is a trophy wife for a rich man. They are a couple deeply in love, but there are secrets in their marriage that could destroy them both. Sonya, the youngest, was the only one who managed to leave the abusive situation and make a life for herself on her own terms. However, she too suffers from trust issues and loneliness.
When the family meets again, all illusions are shattered once more, and old wounds are exposed. At the same time, new problems surface as Gia is discovered to be in an abusive relationship and considers it normal because of the family background. Trishas marriage is in trouble, and Sonya is unable to start a relationship with a man with whom she is in love. As the family grapples with their ever-increasing problems, Brent continues to lie in a coma.
Gradually, secrets come out into the open, exposed for everyone to see. Instead of leading to more friction, the baring of secrets actually proves to be healing. With Brent near death, the family comes together and manages to heal. Ranee, the woman who stood by and watched her children get beaten, redeems herself by punishing the man who tormented them all.
The book is an attempt to show that abuse has far-reaching consequences that can continue even after the victim is out of reach of the abuser. Based on Badanis own experiences with abuse, this is a heart-rending story of family dysfunction.
Introducing the Author
S EJAL BADANI IS AN AMERICAN AUTHOR OF INDIAN ORIGIN and takes inspiration from her Indian background in her work. A lawyer by profession, Badani left her first career to pursue writing full time. Her debut book, Trail of Broken Wings , is a semi-autobiographical book based on her experiences of domestic abuse. Prior to the release of this book, she had written screenplays, short stories, and plays, and has also won awards for them.
Badani is from a Gujarati Indian family just like the characters in the book. She wrote the story after witnessing and surviving her childhood abuse. She also took in the experiences of other abuse victims to weave the story of suffering, pain, loss, and ultimate survival into her own story. Badanis book has several elements of her life story, which helped her through the healing process and proved both painful and cathartic for her.
Badanis favorite authors include Amy Tan, Jodi Picoult, Jhumpa Lahiri, and Stephen King. She likes to read a lot and is currently working on two novels in completely different genres: the first is about an Indian-American woman returning to India to discover her grandmothers legacy, and the second is a dystopian book set in the future after war has changed human lives.
Badani today enjoys the support of her family, and her sister and brother-in-law even help her by reading every draft of her books. Though Badani and her family moved to the U.S. when she was only two years old, she has kept in touch with her Indian roots and regularly eats Indian food at home. She loves Bollywood movies and is only happy that the issue of abuse is no longer taboo in Hindi movies. She also enjoys Indian festivals like Diwali and Navratri, which are her favorite times of the year.
Badani loves music, and her hobbies include reading, traveling and cycling along the ocean. She also loves interacting with her readers and speaks to book clubs and readers via Skype. Today, the author lives in the Bay Area on the West Coast with her husband, children, and two dogs.
