For most Oklahomans the story of the state begins with the removal of the Five Tribes to Indian Territory early in the nineteenth century. In fact, Oklahoma has a rich, diverse, and enduring native cultural heritage. Using recent discoveries and information unearthed since its original 1980 publication, From Mounds to Mammoths presents Oklahomas prehistory from thirty thousand years ago to historic contact times.Claudette Gilbert and Robert L. Brooks take the reader back thousands of years to experience life on the plains. They discuss the Cooper site, which has given us valuable insights into Folsom technology, hunting practices, and ritual. Here archaeologists discovered a thunderbolt painted on a bison skull-the earliest evident of artwork in North America. The story of Spiro Mounds, a more recent culture, reveals village life in the Arkansas River basin 800-1000 years ago.Told chronologically with vivid chapter-opening vignettes, From Mounds to Mammoths provides a fascinating glimpse into the variety of Oklahoma native cultures.

Preface
Claudette Marie Gilbert wrote the first edition of Oklahoma Prehistory in 1980. The Oklahoma Archeological Survey and what is now called the Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History published the volume through University Printing Services. By the early 1990s all twenty-five hundred copies of this document had been distributed to schools or sold to the general public; however, there remained a critical need for a nontechnical work on Oklahoma's cultural heritage. In 1997 I began work on a revision to Oklahoma Prehistory with the expectation that we could fund reprinting of an expanded version of Claudette's initial work, but increased printing costs made this impossible. In late 1997 the revised draft was submitted to the University of Oklahoma Press for consideration, and it was subsequently accepted for publication.
The second edition of Oklahoma Prehistory contains an edited version of Claudette Gilbert's original work and has been expanded to reflect the growing body of knowledge about Oklahoma's prehistory. This edition has been renamed From Mounds to Mammoths in order

to reduce confusion with another book published for use in the college classroom, The Prehistory of Oklahoma, edited by Robert E. Bell.
I wish to thank the many people who have contributed their time and skills to this work. Many individuals assisted Claudette in the development of the first edition: Don Wyckoff helped in the research and editing; Larry Neal, David Hughes, Sarah Herstand, and Tim Baugh reviewed the text. Lois Albert helped with the discussion of palynology; Janet Black and Pam Odell typed the final draft of the first edition; and Tim Baugh and Rain Vehik patiently answered questions and helped with photos for the early buffalo hunter and forager chapters. Mary Goodman provided the beautiful drawings found throughout the first and second editions. Robert E. Bell reviewed the manuscript and patiently hunted down negatives, and J. Daniel Rogers helped with the chapter on Caddoan mound builders.
