Bradley explores Americas perception of Asiaas it was shaped by callow policymakers and self-appointed sachemsand the gap between that perception and reality: the received wisdom, hopeful hogwash, and accumulated misunderstandings that led to three major Asian wars (and a few minor ones). Roosevelts mother, Sara, conjured a China of magical thinking in Franklins young head, despite never having left the European compound. It was a vision that would stay with Franklin, Bradley convincingly maintains, affecting his decisions regarding the wartime politics of the country. FDRs East Asia policy is a story as complex as a Faberg egg, that Bradley handles with aplomb. Bradley is sharp and rueful, and a voice for a more seasoned, constructive vision of our international relations with East Asia.

Peter Lewis, Christian Science Monitor

Riveting. If you bought any other of Mr. Bradleys books, you need to put this one on the shelf along with it.

Don Imus, Imus in the Morning

We now have a backstory to one of the worlds most important relationshipsthe United States and China.

Renee Montagne, NPRs Morning Edition

Well worth a read. The new book covers, better than Ive seen anywhere else, the history of how many of the wealthiest individuals and institutions of the East Coast United States in the nineteenth century got their moneyincluding Franklin Delano Roosevelts grandfathers moneyby illegally selling opium in China. For the full account, I recommend Bradleys book.

David Swanson, Counterpunch

Insightful and entertaining.

Publishers Weekly

A vivid, bracing, and careful study. There are lessons to be learned about war and peace, and Bradleys valuable book offers a warning about past and future unnecessary entanglements.

Murray Polner, History News Network

Bradley has produced another gripping historical account with ramifications for todays world.

World Affairs Council

The China Mirageunderscores the missed opportunities in our relationship with Chinaa lesson for our current leaders.
