Life Between the Levees: America’s Riverboat Pilots: summary, description and annotation

We offer to read an annotation, description, summary or preface (depends on what the author of the book "Life Between the Levees: America’s Riverboat Pilots" wrote himself). If you haven't found the necessary information about the book — write in the comments, we will try to find it.

Life Between the Levees is a chronicle of first person reflections and folklore from pilots who have dedicated their lives to the river. The stories are as diverse as the storytellers themselves, and the volume is full of drama, suspense, and a way of life a landlubber could never imagine. Although waterways and ports in the Mississippi corridor move billions of dollars of products throughout the US and foreign markets, in todays world those who live and work on land have little knowledge of the river and the people who work there. In ten years of interviewing, Melody Golding collected over one hundred personal narratives from men and women who worked and lived on brown water, our inland waterways. As photographer, she has taken thousands of photos, of which 130 are included, of the people and boats, and the rivers where they spend their time. The book spans generations of river life--the oldest pilot was born in 1917 and the youngest in 1987--and includes stories from the 1920s to today. The stories begin with the pilots who were broke in by early steamboat pilots who were on the river as far back as the late 1800s. The early pilots in this book witnessed the transition from steamboat to diesel boat while the youngest grew up in the era of GPS and twenty-first-century technology. Among many topics, the pilots reflect movingly on the time spent away from home because of their career, a universal reality for all mariners. As many pilots say when they talk about the river, I hate her when Im with her, and I miss her when Im gone.--Provided by publishe

I would like to give thanks to God for giving me the ability to do this work.

I am deeply thankful to and would like to acknowledge with sincere gratitude the mariners who so generously shared their stories so that others would know and appreciate life on the river.

Furthermore, I am thankful to my publisher, the University Press of Mississippi, and my editor, Craig Gill, who has believed in my work from the very beginning. Many thanks especially to Golding Barge Line Captain Todd Hundley and Mike Gatti, who aided me along the way.

Last and not least I would like to thank my family, Steve, Austin, and John Reid, who have encouraged and supported me through this journey.

May God Bless all of you.

Almighty God our Heavenly Father, Creator of the Universe and Author of Salvation, we give thanks for all of the great rivers which flow from this nation but most especially we give you thanks for the noble Mississippi River and her tributaries which helped propel this nation into greatness. The gift of abundance you provide us through these rivers would be for naught except for the skill and dedication of the American Merchant Mariner. Be pleased to hear us and to let your blessing rest always upon these who plough the rivers of this nation. Reach out your hand to them as you did to blessed Peter when he walked upon the sea. Send a holy angel from on high to watch over them and to aid their navigation. When they have completed their watches, bring them back to their homes and kin where they may, with glad and grateful hearts, be pleased to give you thanks for all things. And finally we pray that when each of us has completed our final watch here on earth that you, in your mercy, will navigate our soul to the everlasting shores of peace and to that quiet harbor of our hearts desire where you live and reign now and forever.
