May 22, 1856: A MEMBER OF CONGRESS FROM SOUTH CAROLINA WALKS INTO THE SENATE CHAMBER, LOOKING FOR TROUBLE.

That Congressman, Preston Brooks, was ready to attack Senator Charles Sumner of Massachusetts over remarks Sumner made slamming senators who supported slavery in Kansas. Brooks lifted his cane to beat Sumner, and here the action in the book stops, so that Steve Sheinkin can explain just where this confrontation started. In the process, he unravels the complicated string of events the small things, the personal ones, the big issues that led to The Civil War. It is a time and a war that threatened Americas very existence, revealed in the surprising true stories of the soldiers and statesmen who battled it out.

Steve Sheinkin
During many years spent writing American history textbooks, Steve Sheinkin filled fat files with all the amazing stories and surprising quotes that texbook editors would never let him use. Now he is finally using all that material to write history books that kids will actually want to read. He has also written Which Way to the Wild West? , which relates the breathtaking adventure of Americas westward expansion, and Two Miserable Presidents, the amazing and terrible tale of the Civil War. Steve lives in Brooklyn, New York, with his wife and daughter.

Tim Robinson
Tim Robinsons work has graced the pages of many childrens books and appears regularly in major newspapers and magazines. He lives in Croton-on-Hudson, New York, with his wife, Marguerite, and their two sons, Wyatt and Luke.
H eres a typical day for me: I spend ten hours in the library reading tall stacks of books and taking tons of notes. Yes, I basically do homework for a living. But I like it, actually. I find stories and characters that interest me and I follow them around, jumping from one book to another, chasing down leads in a search for ever-better details and quotes. I sometimes think of myself as a kind of detectivea story detective.
The point is, I ended up reading hundreds of books while writing Two Miserable Presidents . Below is a list of the ones I found most useful. If you want to learn more about the people and events of the Civil War, this list would be a good place to start. I hope its helpful.
Books about the Civil War
I started my research by reading a bunch of books about the Civil Warbooks that cover the entire war. When you read books like this you dont get too much detail about any one person or event, but you get a great overall picture of what happened and why.

Catton, Bruce. The Centennial History of the Civil War. 3 vols.: The Coming Fury, Terrible Swift Sword, Never Call Retreat . Garden City, N.Y.: Doubleday, 1961-65.
. A Stillness at Appomattox. Garden City, N.Y.: Doubleday, 1953.
Foote, Shelby. The Civil War: A Narrative . Vols. 1-3. New York: Random House, 1958-74.

Symonds, Craig L. A Battlefield Atlas of the Civil War . Cartography by William J. Clipson. Baltimore: Nautical and Aviation Pub. Co. of America, 1993.
Books about the events leading to the Civil War
After working through the books covering the entire Civil War, I looked for books that would tell me about events that led up to it. These were some helpful sources. Anyone who thinks politics is hopelessly partisan and mean today should look back at just how nasty things got in the 1850s!

Bordewich, Fergus M. Bound for Canaan: The Epic Story of the Underground Railroad . New York: HarperCollins, 2005.
Johannsen, Robert W., ed. The Lincoln-Douglas Debates of 1858 . New York: Oxford University Press, 1965.

Oates, Stephen. To Purge This Land with Blood. New York: Harper & Row, 1970.
Potter, David Morris. The Impending Crisis , 1848-1861. New York: Harper & Row, 1976.
Schlesinger, Arthur M. Congress Investigates: A Documentary History. New York: Chelsea House, 1975.
Stowe, Harriet Beecher. Uncle Toms Cabin . New York: Modern Library, 1938.
Books and articles about specific Civil War battles or subjects
After making an outline for the book, I started looking for great stories and quotes for each chapter. Theres no shortage of materialmore than 50,000 books have been written about various Civil War subjects! No, I didnt read all of them. I focused on the books below, because they give readers great real-life details about what it was like to live through these events.
Bailey, Ronald H. The Bloodiest Day: The Battle of Antietam. Alexandria, Va.: Time-Life Books, 1984.
. Forward to Richmond: McClellans Peninsular Campaign. Alexandria, Va.: Time-Life Books, 1983.

Winik, Jay. April 1865: The Month That Saved America . New York: HarperCollins, 2001.
Biographies of major Civil War figures
The Civil War has a cast of characters no writer could inventineluding the one who gets my personal vote for the best character in American history: Abraham Lincoln. Sometimes Ill read entire biographies in search of just one or two interesting details to help bring the character to life. (Well, maybe I dont always read the entire book.)
