Prologue

Gary was a 21-year-old student in his last year of college. He was a handsome, curious young man ready to embark on life and an unknown future. With girls through high school, he had the typical innocent explorations of a young boy and one girl friend that lasted only three months. A virgin when he entered college, by his senior year he had scattered one night stands and a few friends with benefits, but so far, no one special had entered his life.

One afternoon as he was leaving the cafeteria after lunch to head for class, a young female student came walking toward him with a bubbly carefree step and continued out the glass doors and into the cool fall day. Something happened to him at that moment that had never happened before; his head turned to look at her and the force of it impelled his body to spin, as if with a will of its own, in a half circle as she walked effortlessly past him, oblivious to his presence. It wasnt this girls beauty or her curves that caught his attention; there was something imperceptible about her that instantaneously captivated and compelled him to walk in her wake, one mindless step after the other, out the glass doors to watch her go on without a glance back. He lingered briefly, the way one might remain to watch the sun after it had set, until she disappeared into an academic building leaving him dumbfound and slightly bedazzled. He then turned slowly around and reluctantly headed to his own class. By the time the semester had ended for winter break hed forgotten all about her.

At the start of the New Year winter semester, Gary and some friends went to a party at an off-campus fraternity house he had never been to before. It was still early in the evening and the main party room they were in was not yet crowded. Gary was on one side with his friends drinking cheap beer out of plastic cups when the girl from the cafeteria cheerfully walked in with her own group of friends. Gary instantly recognized her, and is if by happenstance, their eyes met, and they both smiled simultaneously. He didnt go up to her right away, opting to play it cool, but within the hour they were talking.

Five years later they were married.

Annie was a voluptuous 30-year-old at the beginning stages of attempting to perform triathlons. Always athletic, she liked the discipline of preparing for an event to force her to exercise and keep fit. She began training with different groups of people to cultivate her commitment. On one ride she expressed her need to upgrade to a new road bike and was told about a shop shed never been to in a nearby village. The next Saturday she went by herself to check it out.

The store was a standalone house with a wooden floor and she immediately liked the homey feel of the place. She was looking at bikes hanging from the ceiling when she saw the shops owner. Gabe was tall, dark, sinewy and devilishly handsome. Annie stood as if mesmerized, gaping at him with a flush of blood to her face and a tickle between her legs she had never before experienced. The feeling was so strong she had to leave the store and go outside to compose herself.

When she returned she managed to get Gabe to help her and flirted shamelessly with him. Normally shy with men, she found herself selfishly monopolizing his time and asking questions like which seat would feel best between her legs? She kept returning to the store to buy small items and ask questions but really (in her own words) she shamelessly threw herself at him. She managed to find out that in addition to an avid biker, he was also a mountain climber, spoke Italian and into wine, so she searched out tickets to a local wine festival and asked him to go with her, making up a story about a friend who backed out leaving her with an extra ticket.

The festival went well and she asked him out on a second date at her house to watch football. During the game she could no longer control herselfpulling his pants down she got on top of him and made her desire come true right on the couch with 60,000 Miami Dolphin fans cheering in the background. This began a sexual tryst that found Annie doing (and saying) naughty things shed never thought possible. She opened herself up and discovered a side of herself that would have done anything for him.

Three months later it was over.

These two stories, one of love and one of lust, illustrate that there can be an energetic attraction between people so powerful it might completely change the direction of ones life. We cant force it to happen and we often dont see it coming, but once established it can make moving to Alaska to be with what is essentially a stranger, even though we hate the cold and dark winters, all of a sudden sound like a really great idea.

Many people are hoping for that singular life event; a Big Bang that will create a new cosmos in which to delight and play. In our contemporary culture, the idea of finding the One is often believed to be necessary for personal happiness and there is a plethora of dating sites available to help achieve this goal. If sex and attraction are so powerful, and we desire so strongly for the relationship to work out, why does it often become so difficult?

Millions of people marry each year with the confidence that they have found their life partner and in front of friends and family will even swear to God to be together forever; yet more than half of those marriages eventually end in dissolution. How can we prevent or reverse this from happening to us? How can we take the loving connection we already have and turn it into something extraordinary?
