W e both can remember one of the first personal training clients we ever had pointing to the back of her arm and saying, How do I lose weight right here? Now, years later in our clinic, we are confronted with the same question again and againmen distraught over stubborn chest fat they call man boobs, women complaining about saddlebags and inner thigh fat, and both men and women asking us to help them get rid of belly fat that stays no matter what they do.
But you know better than that, dont you? You know you cant lose weight where you want to. It simply does not work that way. Youre born to be a certain shapebe it a pear, or an apple, or a rulerand youre destined to remain that way for life. At least that is what the diet books, workout gurus, and health bloggers have told you.
After all, anyone who has ever exhaustively exercised and religiously dieted in an attempt to reshape his or her body can tell you that, in many ways, it is an exercise in futility. Can you relate? Sure, you go on a diet and you lose weight and tone up, but despite your best efforts, you are disappointed when your large pear shape merely becomes a smaller, and usually mushier, pear shape. If your thighs, belly, hips, and butt were problem areas before the diet, theyll usually remain problems even after you drastically cut calories and slog away on the treadmill. Muscle-building exercises like weight lifting often backfire and give you a puffy, waterlogged look. Even worse, the best results never last: Diets are notorious for their fleeting results, and most people will regain all of their lost weightor worse, end up even fatter than they were before they started dieting. And where does the weight always seem to grow back fastest? In the stubborn problem areas people are most determined to target, such as the belly, butt, hips, and thighs.
Why does this happen? Your metabolism does not work like a calculator the way the calorie zealots and diet pushers want you to believe. It does not work like a chemistry set either, the way the low-carb fanatics and insulin junkies want you to believe. In reality, there is no exact magic mathematical formula or hormonal-chemistry mixture that leads to sustained and lasting fat loss for all. In fact, both of these approaches will just as easily create the metabolic damage described above.

A NEW APPROACH
Simply put, dieting is making you fat, and it has made your metabolism defective. That defect is not only keeping you from losing weight, but also slowly making you fatter and your stubborn fatty areas even more stubborn. Up until this moment, you have been operating under the assumption that your metabolism is mapped out like this:
Calorie Reduction = Weight Loss = Balanced Metabolism
In reality, weight loss and your metabolism work more like this:
Balanced Metabolism = Natural Calorie Reduction = Permanent Weight Loss
As we said, two things are required to lose weight: low calories and hormonal balance. The popular eat less, exercise more approach (which most diet books and programs push in one way or another) easily lowers calories, but also disrupts hormonal physiology. As a consequence, key metabolic hormones like leptin, insulin, thyroid, and others shift in a way that causes increased hunger, unpredictable energy levels, relentless cravings, and a dramatically slowed metabolic rate. All of these changes mean any short-term weight-loss results you enjoyed quickly turn into long-term metabolic damage. Eventually, you will regain the weight you lost, more of that weight will end up in the hard-to-lose fat areas you were trying to get rid of in the first place, and it will be even more stubborn the next time you diet. In other words, if you want to get fatter and make your fat more stubborn, dieting is the best way to accomplish it.
