About the Author

Frank Boumphrey was introduced to programming by the British Army, which took him away from his favorite occupations of blowing things up and jumping out of planes and tried to make him into a mainframe programmer.

Burnt out by thinking in hexadecimals, he left the army and went to medical school, spending most of his career at a large Midwestern medical institution and ending up as a professor and chief of spine surgery. Along the way he helped introduce the MRI to the medical world.

He maintained his interest in programming and was early involved with the Internet and exchange of medical information electronically. In this role, he was a user of SGML and an early adopter of HTML, which he used since its inception. This led to a second career in consulting on medical documentation and electronic record keeping. He recently retired from this second career.

He was at one time president of the HTML Writers Guild and, as such, served on several W3C working groups, including the XHTML group (he was an editor of the Recommendation) and the CSS, RDF, XForms, and DOM groups. He also sat on the W3C advisory committee.

He has written several web-related books, and this is his second For Dummies book.

Frank and his wife Rona shared their house with several cats and occasionally resident children. They have several children and grandchildren.

Dedication

The editors at Wiley dedicate this book in lovely memory of Frank Boumphrey, who passed away soon after he finished writing the manuscript for this book, and in honor of his family. Franks good humor and the joy he took in writing and revising has left a wonderful and lasting impression on us all.
