Chapter 1: The Role of Our Immune System

Youve heard of the immune system, but do you really understand what it does and why its so vitally important to your health?
First of all, lets talk toxin exposure.
Your body can only handle so much. So lets say, for instance, that your body can efficiently process and remove one million toxins in a day (which is a fact). Well, according to the Global Healing Center, we are taking in roughly two million toxins dailytwice the amount our body can handle! And these toxins are coming from normal day-to-day exposure to the air we breathe, the food we eat, the beverages we consume, prescription drugs, heavy metals, radiation, physical and emotional stress, parasitesand more! Essentially, simply being alive is a recipe for toxin-burden. The solution is to step up your game and get to work on supporting all aspects of your life, including the important parts youve been neglecting (sleep, stress, relationships, diet, exercise).
How about this for perspective? Just one packet of synthetic sugar can contain more than ten thousand toxic molecules in its ingredients! Yuck!
Our bodies are highly intelligent. We are constantly exposed to all sorts of toxins on a daily basis, and our body does its best to get rid of them as quickly as possible. The real kicker is that without proper elimination, these sneaky toxins can pass through the intestinal walls and find their way into your bloodstream where they go to work to create the perfect home for illness and disease. Let me repeat that. Overabundance of toxins creates illness and disease. Scary, but true.

Drink your green juice by the gallon, and if youre feeling extra awesome, wear that cape and sport it proudly. But also know that there is more to a healthy, sexy body than simply the right diet, and this book will provide you the tools necessary to get back on track and give those toxins a run for their money.
What Is the Immune System and Why Is It So Important?
The role of the immune system is to protect us from illness and disease, and it does so by attacking any foreign invaders that creep in, such as bacteria, parasites, and viruses. When its working as it should, it acts as a line of defense against the bad guys. A healthy immune system is able to differentiate between the bodys own healthy tissue and unhealthy tissue. When the immune system becomes compromised, such as in the case of autoimmune disease, the body has a hard time telling the difference between the good and bad tissues, creating a slew of problems if not corrected right away.
There are six major components to the immune system: l ymph nodes, spleen, bone marrow, lymphocytes, and thymus . Each plays a crucial role in the development and maintenance of our immunity and ensuring that our bodys ability to fight is running smoothly and efficiently.
The l ymph nodes are part of the lymphatic system, and their job is to produce and store cells that fight infection, to be used as needed. They also contain a clear fluid, known as lymph, which allows those cells to be carried to different parts of the body and used accordingly. When were sick, these nodes can become enlarged and painful, which youve likely experienced at some point in your life.
The spleen is the largest lymphatic organ and is home to our white blood cells, which are used to fight infection and disease. According to the National Institutes of Health , the spleen also helps control the amount of blood in the body and disposes of old or damaged blood cells.
