Foreword by Sienna Miller

I first started working with Wendy in 2007, and she has done my make-up ever since. Aside from the fact that she is the most hysterical and fantastic company, I genuinely believe that there is no one more talented working in her field. She has a complete artists ability to understand light and shade and is a pioneer with skin.

I have often wondered how she managed to look as fantastic and glowing as she does, while also knowing that she is on a plane every other week, and this nutritional bible is the secret! I have tasted Wendys food and the recipes are inspiring and delicious just like the woman herself.

It is so refreshing to find a genuinely informative nutritional book that is written by someone who is honest, not trying to preach or inflict guilt, who knows how to have more fun than anyone and is one of the great women of the world. It is a gift to us all and I cant wait to get cooking!

INTRODUCTION Everyone wants great skin with a healthy glow If you asked me - photo 3

INTRODUCTION

Everyone wants great skin with a healthy glow.

If you asked me years ago, I would have said that great skin is mostly down to make-up and skincare. Make-up is my profession, after all, and making people look their best my trade. Ive become known as the master of nudes. Why? Because I figured out a way to do make-up that was invisible to the eye but made the clients skin look amazing and enhanced her features.

But things never stand still, least of all in fashion, and its been a continuous learning curve since. Ive battled my way to the top of my profession, bumbling along with no advice or mentoring, just working things out for myself. Ive learned loads and Ive learned the hard way through mistakes and trial and error. Ive been put in tricky situations, working with far from perfect skin or in difficult environments. Up a freezing-cold mountain or in a stiflingly hot village in Zanzibar, make-up can react really differently.

When youre a make-up artist, people expect you to know everything, and not just about make-up. Im not a paramedic, a GP, a psychotherapist or a dermatologist, but when something goes down on a shoot, Im expected to sort out all problems, from black eyes to broken relationships. Ive become good at hiding imperfections, applying skin products as a temporary measure. There is no quick fix to achieve a perfect complexion.

Ive become known as the master of nudes.

Up until recently, we treated the skin from the outside; you would go to the doctor and get a topical cream. But Ive come to see that skin troubles are a reflection of whats going on inside. To get perfect skin and maintain it, you need the right balance inside and out. Even top models have problems. They have to deal with problems ASAP cleaning out their system after all, theyre just like us but its their job to look good.

While I live and breathe make-up, I believe that beautiful skin comes first make-up wont look good if the skin is clogged or irritated. And the skin wont look good unless you pay attention to your health in general and your diet in particular. This book is not about make-up, but about how to achieve beautiful skin.

My work as a make-up artist has taken me all around the world. Ive learned a lot from other cultures, discovering how traditional approaches to health, food and skincare can really work. It was during my time in Paris (I lived there for 4 years and of course my French is amazing not!) that I found what a difference it makes to use fresh organic produce and eat according to the seasons. If something wasnt in season you couldnt buy it. This actually helped me to loose weight as it was quality produce.

A seasonal approach underpins this book. Ive tried to present foods according to the season in which they are grown, or according to whats best for your health and your skin at a particular time of year. And because looking after your skin on the outside is important, too, Ive added a section on skincare, including my routine (a failsafe approach but only if you keep it up!) and self-help tips for skin types, plus ideas for making your own beauty aids.

I like to think of stretching as the body smiling, and dancing as the body laughing.

Exercise really helps, too. I have always been active and love the endorphin rush it gives me. The fact that my skin looks so much better for it is an added bonus. The body needs to move; it loves to move. If it doesnt, everything just seizes up and problems arise. Getting your heart rate up and breaking a sweat is key to eliminating toxins. I like to think of stretching as the body smiling, and dancing as the body laughing. Anybody can do these things. Excercise does not have to be regimented, dont get bogged down by the gym!

I must emphasise that Im not an expert on the subject and Im not a doctor, though Ive worked with a nutritionist on some of the finer details. A lot of what I say in this book is based on common sense and on information Ive gathered from simply taking an interest in food and what the nutrients can do for the skin.

Your body will tell you what you need, but it doesnt scream, it whispers, so try to listen.

Ive tried to break this down so that the dishes are simple and easy to make, with a focus on incredible produce and ingredients chosen for their powers to feed the skin. The all-important thing is to select foods from as wide a range as possible. Your health and skin will definitely benefit, you just need to bear in mind that none of the foods alone or in combination are a miracle cure.

Ive written this book because I wanted to inspire you to think more about the food you eat and what it can do for your skin, with recipes and beauty tips that are simple and accessible and can easily be integrated into your daily routine. You dont have to do everything just use it as a springboard for your own ideas. But every little adjustment will help I promise. I know its hard and, to be honest, I dont always practise what I preach, especially when Im pushed for time. On the other hand, I know that when I dont bother, my body tells me about it I feel bloated, uncomfortable, my mouth feels sore and my skin is irritated.

Listen to your body, even though its hard because theres so much going on these days, so much to distract us. Your body will tell you what you need, but it doesnt scream, it whispers, so try to listen. And try to relax and enjoy yourself, too, because the way to achieve that healthy glow is really very simple just laugh, exercise and feed the skin. A little bit of make-up never hurt any of us either.
