Preface

We live in an era of great innovation and technological evolution, which is expressed at its best in the cardiovascular field. The cross-fertilization between surgical and endovascular treatments, which are functioning complementary, stimulates the constant improvement of both the techniques (e.g., classic cardiac surgery itself entered a new phase of enrichments).

This new frontier translates into new needs and new demands, in which a proper understanding of cardiovascular imaging becomes fundamental.

Technological evolution has led the world of cardiac imaging to technical possibilities considered unexpected a few years ago. We have moved from two-dimensional diagnostic imaging to the current landscape, which consists of several very sophisticated imaging modalities to be combined. Integration of preoperative echocardiographic and multislice computed tomography (MSCT) information, nuclear radiology, fusion of intraprocedural echocardiographic, and MSCT imaging with angiography is part of an education that has become necessary today.

This book originates from an innovative editorial concept, which offers the reader a structured and complete overview of multimodality imaging related to the aortic valve. The five chapters illustrate diagnosis of different aortic valve diseases, criteria of preoperative screening, surgical and transcatheter planning, intraprocedural imaging, and the related postoperative follow-up.

Multimodality imaging is one of the most stimulating and enriching steps that will lead to a common language of cardiac surgeons and interventional cardiologists in the near future. This knowledge is nowadays essential, as well as the next frontier to be dominated by those who will have to deal with cardiovascular therapies.
