Introduction
"When I was in eighth grade, I found out I had ADDattention deficit disorder," remembers Karl, a high-school junior. "My doctor suggested Ritalin to help manage my ADD, but I wasn't sure at first. I decided to give it a try, and the results were great. School seemed easier. My grades got better. I made friends.
"But word got around that I was taking Ritalin. People started bugging me for it. That's when I discovered that my medication worked two ways. For me, it helped my problem a lot. But people without ADD could get high on it. I didn't know what to do."
Doctors are prescribing Ritalin, or the drug methylphenidate (meh-thal-FEH-na-DAYT), its generic equivalent, to more children and teenagers than ever. Today 2.5 million children and adults in the United States alone have prescriptions for Ritalin.
