Introduction
Being a supervisor can be a very rewarding experience, but it can also be one of the most difficult things you have ever been asked to do. All too often, new supervisors have had little or no training, and may not even be aware of the skills they lack until a problem occurs. Aimed at the new supervisor, this publication addresses basic supervisory skills and provides practical information needed by supervisors.
For this expanded, revised third edition, we have updated the original chapters and have added chapters on managing work time, managing diversity, and conflict resolution. As library organizations become more complex, supervisors must address issues of working in a diverse workplace serving a diverse clientele. In addition, as organizations learn to live with constant change, supervisors may spend more and more time resolving conflicts and helping staff learn to work in a more flexible environment. For this edition, we have addressed these issues that now face all supervisors. As in previous editions, we have included lists of readings for those who seek additional information on these topics.
