About the Author
Louise Miller is something of a night owl herself since she is presently teaching English on a split shift. She also understands what it means to burn the midnight oil by writing, editing, and researching as a free-lancer. This night owl spirit comes from her love of languages, especially English and German. She started out as a German teacher and teaches it today, after having studied in Vienna, Austria, and Bonn, Germany. She has taught German at universities in Kansas, Missouri, and Illinois.
Her love of English led her to teaching and publishing. She has taught English at community and business colleges, has conducted writing workshops, and has worked both full time and free-lance for various publishing houses. These include New Horizons Publishers, Compton's Encyclopedia, Rand McNally & Company, Richard D. Irwin, and World Book. Miller was also research coordinator for television quiz shows in Los Angeles and has written three books on careerstwo on careers for animal lovers and one for those who want to work with nature. She also has written a regular wildlife column for the Woodstock (Illinois) Sentinel.

Chapter One Introduction
When most people are growing up and thinking about working for a living, they probably envision themselves in an office working from 9 to 5. It may never occur to them that their hours could be 5 to 9. Sometime after the invention of electricity, however, night became day and vice versa for many workers in the Industrial Age. Even though the Earth turns on its axis every 24 hours and we humans have adapted our lives to that cycle, the world suddenly was turned around and whole new work shifts became possible.
