Page vii About the Author Along with the rest of you, the author is concerned with the preservation of the planet and the conservation of natural resources. Besides recycling, shopping carefully, and not eating meat, Miller is also trying to spread the word about restoration, reusing, and repair. In addition to nature, Miller also loves languages, especially English and German. She started out as a German teacher and teaches it today, after having studied in Vienna, Austria, and Bonn, Germany. She has also taught German at the Universities of Kansas, Missouri, and Illinois. Her love of English led her to teaching, writing, editing, and proofreading the language. She has taught English at community and business colleges, has conducted writing workshops, and has worked both full time and free-lance for publishing houses. These include New Horizons Publishers, Compton's Encyclopedia, Rand McNally & Company, Richard D. Irwin, American Library Association, National Institute of Real Estate Brokers, and World Book. Miller was also research coordinator for television quiz shows in Los Angeles and has written a regular wildlife column for the Woodstock (Illinois) Sentinel.

Page ix Foreword With environmental issues such as global warming, ozone depletion, and tropical deforestation increasingly in the news, it should come as no surprise that Americans are more concerned about the environment than ever before. For the first time, Americans are realizing that our quality of life depends largely on the quality of the environment. And more and more people want to do something about it.
