About the Authors
H. Ned Seelye quit high school at the end of his junior year and hitchhiked to Mexico to seek his fortune. In two weeks his future became clear: it was zilch. He didn't know Spanish, had no work permit, had no marketable skill (couldn't even type), and didn't know anybody in Mexico. It was time for Plan B. Seelye entered college on the basis of entrance exams (what other basis was there?), became fluent in Spanish, and acquired some marketable skills. Seelye specializes in intercultural communication and educational research (mostly in Third World settings) and has lived almost twenty years abroad. His international career includes projects in 30 countries of Europe, Africa, Asia, and Latin America. He has held many positions of responsibility, including Illinois State Foreign Language Supervisor, Illinois State Director of Bilingual Education, CEO of International Resource Development, Inc. (a social science research firm in LaGrange, Illinois), Associate Professor of Sociology and Anthropology, and Executive Director of the Spanish Education Development Center (Washington, D.C.).
