FOREWORD
There are certain Dutch paintings from the seventeenth century that make vividly real the texture and tone of everyday life. Similarly, certain documents from that far-away period are unusually revealing of how ordinary people felt and acted. Such are the records of the county court in Middlesex County of the Colony and Province of Massachusetts Bay. These records include not only the formal proceedings of the court but also the depositions made by hundreds of witnesses and those charged with criminal behavior. Out of these depositions Roger Thompson has woven a story of individuals in search of freedom and security, of love and intimacyindividuals such as Sarah Crouch of Charlestown, Christopher Grant of Watertown, and Samuel and Hannah Hutchinson of Reading. In bringing these forgotten, faceless people to life Thompson has performed one of the classic services of the social historian.
The Middlesex records allow Thompson to perform another service for us, that of finding pattern and meaning in the past. The voices that remain so vivid in these documents disclose to us attitudes and actions of which we know too little. Collectively these voices instruct us on the relationship between social order and disorder. Men and women in seventeenth-century Massachusetts could make some choices, but not others, and the hundreds of cases that Thompson has studied allow him to infer persistent structures. The records strongly suggest that the puritan social system was not so rigid and the relationships between the sexes not so regulated as some historians have suggested. The argument of Sex in Middlesex is revisionist: the "puritans" and "theocrats" who throng its pages do not behave in accordance with popular stereotype or conform to the interpretations of major historians.
