Special Thanks
I would like to thank my dear friend Sam Sanchez. Sam, you have been such a big help when working on this project.
I would also like to thank you, the reader. Thank you for your purchase. If this book has helped you at all, would you please consider leaving a review online where you purchased this book? I would sincerely appreciate it.
Introduction
Are you struggling with making ends meet? Do you find yourself following a budget but still coming up short at the end of the month? If you need assistance, this book is for you.
I believe that every person deserves the right to the basic necessities, regardless of financial ability. These necessities include food, clothing, shelter, hygiene items, and household goods. In my book, I have also included resources for baby supplies, recreational activities, and random items such as books and games.
In this crazy economic climate, many of us have found ourselves lacking in some areas of our life. We have mouths to feed and backs to clothe. We, as adults, may be able to do without, but our kids certainly cannot. I hope this book helps you find what you need to make your life more comfortable.
Chapter One: Totally Free vs. Little Cost
If you or a family member/friend are facing money problems, it can be almost impossible to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Having grown up way below the poverty line in a small town that had very few job opportunities available, I can relate. That is why I want to be totally transparent with readers on things that are going to be one hundred percent free versus things that are going to cost something. I also want to help readers understand why some of the options in this book may cost some amount. While spending money when you don't have much, to begin with, can be scary I have set out to explain why taking the risk and spending a few extra dollars on some of these options can really pay off later; and how much you could end up spending should you choose to avoid these options and do things the old fashioned way. (spoiler alert: the old-fashioned way usually costs way more). So, before you get deterred because of membership fees, shipping costs, etc. give this chapter a read.
So, the first thing I want to discuss is membership fees. Throughout the course of this book, there are going to be websites that are super helpful; but they can also charge membership fees. Usually, this is a small fee paid monthly or annually in exchange for the website's services. For example, one of the websites mentioned in chapter three is www.mindmyhouse.com. This website helps connect homeowners and house sitters together. The website used to be free for all to use, but the site grew quickly, and some users were not so serious about house sitting, but more so were curious about how the process worked, etc. The owners of the website decided that it would be in everyone's best interest to create a twenty-dollar fee charged per year (annually) in an effort to create a community of homeowners and house sitters that are equally serious and committed to the process.
Twenty dollars can be a little off-putting if your bank account has gone below triple digits, but this membership fee pays for itself because it is less than two dollars per month. There are other websites that charge a small fee for membership, but when you compare less than two dollars per month to be connected with almost free housing, you really cannot beat it. As rent costs continue to rise, people that don't own property are doing everything they can to keep their heads above water, and membership fees should never discourage you when the website is credible and can really help you find shelter.
When it comes to receiving things for free online, there are usually going to be shipping costs. Most of the time, the charge is not more than ten dollars; however, it does vary from website to website. One of the most popular ways to get "new to you" things is by using trading or bartering websites. Websites like these are typically where getting free things but still having to pay to ship comes in. So, you will need what you could pay in-store to get the same product. More information on trading and bartering in chapter two.
Getting Things Totally free
If membership fees and shipping costs are something that you are not interested in dealing with, there are ways to get free things online and offline without having to pay at all. Here are some tried and true ways to get free things online.
Samples
One of my favorite ways to get totally free things and not have to pay shipping is free samples. Forgot about those, huh? I did too until I saw www.samplesource.com this website quickly became my favorite for getting free samples in the mail. Mainly because they do not charge for shipping. I feel like a free sample should be just that- a free sample. So why have to deal with shipping costs? With SampleSource, you do not. All you need to do is create an account and fill out your profile and select a few products that you would be interested in trying. SampleSource will send you an email when samples that you may be interested in are available; you will need to act fast though because supplies can run out. SampleSource carries various categories of samples like cleaning product samples, health, and beauty samples, and even sometimes, food samples. For more information on how you can get your free samples in the mail visit www.samplesource.com
Freecycle
Another totally free way to get new things is by using www.freecycle.org. I came across this awesome website quite some time ago, and it has changed the way I feel about throwing things away. Sometimes items that we feel are garbage could be just what someone else is looking for. Freecycle's mission is to help reduce waste, help the planet, and help people. By promoting the concept that we do not have to throw something away just because we do not use it anymore, Freecycle is able to help people who are truly in need. You simply make your account click on "Browse Groups" select your state and city, and you will be connected with groups local to you. Once you find a group that is close to you, you can begin your search. Everything posted on Freecycle is free of charge. For more information on how Freecycle works and what kind of items are available in your area visit www.freecycle.org
Community Programs
The holidays can be hard for even wealthy families, but for those below the poverty line, instead of bringing joy, it can bring about feelings of sadness and angst because in this day in age parents who cannot afford to buy their kids the latest tech gadget or most expensive new toy are often shamed. Not long ago, my husband and I were going through financial hard times ourselves, and with Christmas quickly approaching, we were scrambling trying to make extra money so that we would be able to give our son the Christmas he deserved. Bills kept piling up, and we were swamped. I called my local Salvation Army store, and they were happy to help. This was when I was told about their yearly program that helps provide Christmas gifts for children whose parents cannot afford to buy them. I will admit that having to call the Salvation Army for help getting my son gifts was not easy. But at the end of the day, all I cared about was making sure that he had good holiday memories. With this program, you must sign up (in my town the cutoff is November to sign up but check with your local store for details specific to that store.), and you will need to give them the age of the child or children who will need gifts and you will also need to specify if the child is a girl or boy. Once you are on the list, you will be notified of the pickup date and time. On that date and time, you will visit your local Salvation Army store, and they will provide you with the toys, usually in the form of a gift basket.
