PREFACE
Joe Ben Wheat's interest in the Yellow Jacket area was an outgrowth of an already developed interest in the Basketmaker period of the Anasazi culture. This interest developed while he was doing dissertaton research on ruins of the same period in the Mogollon area of Arizona; it later brought him to the University of Colorado Museum. There, Earl H. Morris had long been conducting research on Anasazi culture and artifacts. Although Joe never actually worked with Morris, he learned a great deal from informal contacts with the veteran southwestern archaeologist. He remembers many long evenings spent poring over Morris's voluminous collections of Anasazi materials, making comparisons of pottery styles and discussing methods of manufacture. Most of Morris's materials were later acquired by the University of Colorado Museum and now constitute an impressive comparative collection to be used not only for display, but, more importantly, for research purposes.
Some years after Joe arrived in Boulder, I was still an undergraduate at Beloit College (Wisconsin). In the mid-1960s the college had a year-round calendar (the "Beloit Plan") that saw students shuttling on and off campus throughout the year. A large number of my undergraduate compatriots were also anthropology majors, and with some regularity one or more of them would disappear to a place called "Yellow Jacket," beneficiaries of a friendly arrangement between Joe and Andrew Hunter "Bud'' Whiteford, then director of the Logan Museum of Anthropology and chairman of the Department of Anthropology. My fellow students always returned tanned and enthusiastic.
