Acknowledgments
I will begin by thanking the employees at Premium, Inc. (fictitious name), Who welcomed me into the company and trusted that I would respect their need for total anonymity. Thanks particularly to "Elana," who opened the doors of Premium, clearing obstacles and helping me to decipher the company's norms. I admire her ability to relate to people from an enormous range of worlds within the company and am grateful that she was my cultural guide. A special thanks to the many wonderful people who spoke openly about their lives during our interviews or more informal conversations and broadened my Understanding about Premium's workplace culture.
I am also thankful to Ellen Bankert from the Boston College Center for Work and Family, who generously helped me contact additional "family-friendly" companies, and to the representatives from those companies who asked to remain anonymous. Thanks also to the Radcliffe College Schlesinger Library Archives for material on Women Unifled (fictitious name). In addition, there were a number of people who read various drafts of the book and offered valuable critiques along the Way. Franoise Carr and Patty Hnatiuk had brilliant advice about how to discuss broader economic and political arguments. Carmen Sirianni offered incisive critiques of several drafts of the book. Sharon Kurtz understood exactly what I was trying to accomplish and provided an important reality check about particular sections at the eleventh hour. And Peter Snoad untiringly read

the book at each stage of its development, offering excellent comments.
From the very inception of this book, I have had intellectual and emotional support from an extraordinary group of scholars, including the following professors who were on my dissertation committee at Brandeis University: Shula Reinharz, Karen Hansen, Carmen Sirianni, Irving Zola, and Deanne Bonnar. All of them were insightful and wise in their feedback on various drafts of this book. I also thank the Brandeis Sociology Department, whose staff created a "workplace culture" that nurtured and encouraged me.
In addition, I want to recognize the important training I received while working with a group of friends and colleagues around family policy issues. These people are dedicated to making changes in policies that affect women and their families, and include Randy Albelda, Bruce Astrein, Diane Balser, Barbara Black, Margaret Cerullo, Margerie Davies, Nancy DeProsse, Paula Doress-Worters, Bob French, Clare Higgins, Bruce Johnson, Beth Miller, Barbara Neely, and Marcy Whitebook. For a very long time I have wanted to bridge what I learned in the family policy world and the academic world. This book is an attempt to make these links, and I am grateful to the people who taught and inspired me along the way.
