A Note On Anonymity
In this story about Bill Wilson, I have taken care to protect the anonymity of all persons identified as AA members. The exceptions are Bill Wilson, Dr. Bob Smith, and Ebby Thacher. My precedent for this is that the surnames of all three have been publicly revealed by Alcoholics Anonymous World Services, especially in its own biographies of the AA cofounders. And as noted in Bill Wilson's biography Pass It On, the AA Twelve Traditions make no reference to posthumous anonymity.
Although no AA Tradition governs anonymity after death, a developing custom is to respect the wishes of the surviving family members. In my biography of Ebby Thacher that I wrote for Hazelden, I noted that his closest surviving relativesa niece and a nephewhad given me permission to use his full name. I hope readers will agree that what I've described above meets reasonable requirements for full disclosure of a deceased AA member's last name.
