The key principles of Alcoholics Anonymous are widely familiar as seven popular slogans: First things first. Live and let live. Easy does it. Let go and let God. One day at a time. Pass it on. Keep it simple. This inspiring book explores the deep wisdom behind these simple sayings and shows how the underlying principles relate not only to recovery but also to living happily and well in a confusing world. Mel B. and Bill P. offer a unique look at the historical, spiritual, and Twelve Step roots of the main principles of recovery. Full of practical help and support, this book gives readers a clear and useful sense of how these principles apply to the main goals of recovery: staying clean and sober, building emotional stability and maturity for successful living in sobriety, and finding the will and the way to get along with others and fulfill our full human potential.

Introduction
"Practicing these principles" has been part of the AA experience almost from the time of the fellowship's beginnings. Key principles played an important role in the Oxford Group, which brought sobriety to AA's early members. The principles were then firmly and formally stated in the Twelve Steps. In the years that followed the writing of AA's basic text, Alcoholics Anonymous, in 1939, the Twelve Steps came to be adopted by many types of self-help societies and are no longer looked upon as the exclusive property of AA.
While there's no doubt that the Twelve Steps present AA principles, it is possible and helpful to use additional tools for a more thorough understanding of the main AA ideas. This is done with the AA slogans, which have evolved over time to become important tools in AA groups. Some of these slogans have become so popular that they can be seen on bumper stickers. Many of them also appear on signs in AA meeting rooms or pop up in talks and discussions. Sometimes an AA-related slogan such as "one day at a time" will even be dropped into a newspaper column or story that has no connection with AA.
