Foreword
The year was 1934. Newly elected President Franklin D. Roosevelt, with the United States in the turmoil of the Great Depression, declared, "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself." National Prohibition ended. The movie King Kong was playing at Radio City Music Hall to sellout crowds. Admission was ten cents. For those who were working, the average household income was $1,048. Outside Chicago's Biograph Theater, a barrage of FBI bullets brought down Public Enemy No. 1, John Dillinger. Bob Hope's radio show premiered. In New York City a sober Ebby Thacher made a phone call to his old friend and drinking buddy, a drunken Bill Wilson. Ebby's phone call set in motion a series of events that have changed, for the better, the lives of millions of men and women and their families the world over.
The biography that follows highlights the message of recovery Ebby presented to Bill and the subsequent founding and growth of the fellowship and program of Alcoholics Anonymous. One may ask, why a biography of Ebby? After all, it is well known in the AA fellowship that Ebby's only significant role in AA was to carry the message of hope to Bill. He had little to do with the writing of the Big Book or the laborious work of getting the early AA society established and function-

ing. Later on, he even became a sort of hanger-on who seemed to trade on his friendship with Bill.
